Live broadcasting of railway engineering lectures

We continue teaching students by live streaming lectures and tutorials. The majority of teaching was already online using our online learning environment (Moodle). The PgCert in Blended and Online Learning delivered by Edinburgh Napier Univesity Department of Learning & Teaching Enhancement was a great foundation for supporting our academic staff in building our provision of online undergraduate and post-graduate teaching. We wanted to keep a routine for lecturers and for the students. Students are missing going to lectures and tutorials – so we have attempted to maintain the timetable and continue ‘live’ lectures. To deliver the online material we have used Open Broadcasting Software to live stream the Railway Engineering lectures using Twitch. OBS helps you organise the microphone, images and screen capture from power points. Twitch is an online streamlining platform – similar to Youtube – where you can live stream broadcasts for students to listen in from any mobile or internet connected computer. We have managed to build a new online learning community in response to the crisis and the students are engaging and enjoying the ‘live’ performances and online interaction with academic staff. It was good to hear that the Permanent Way Institution is now delivering technical seminars in a similar fashion. These new methods of teaching and dissemination of industry practice are allowing students to maintain their learning and professional development throughout these difficult times.
