54th Annual UTSG Conference

The 54th UTSG – Universities’ Transport Study Group’s – Annual Conference will take place on 4th – 6th July 2022.

Hosted by Edinburgh Napier University at its Craiglockhart Campus.

The Smeed Prize winner for Best Student Paper was awarded to Ian Greenwood, University of Leeds – ‘The politics of road death in Britain: are we still complacent?’ The runner-up prize was awarded to Sayed Faruque, Edinburgh Napier University – ‘Determinants of shared ownership and use of driverless cars in Edinburgh’
Graham Parkhurst, University of West of England delivered the closing presentation ‘The Future of Mobility May Have Arrived, But Who is Going to Deliver It?’ This was followed by a panel discussion chaired by Margaret Bell.

Key dates:
  • Abstract submission deadline: 6th March 2022
  • Registration opens: 4th May 2022
  • Early bird rates available until: 29th May 2022 
  • Final paper/extended abstract submission deadline: 19th June 2022
  • The deadline for registrations: 26th June 2022 
  • Conference begins: 4th July 2022

Monday 4th July – Registration and buffet lunch at 12.30pm. Opening Plenary and breakout sessions until 6pm.

Tuesday 5th July – 9am-5pm; Evening dinner and drinks reception at 7pm

Wednesday 6th July – 9am-1pm with Closing Plenary, Awards Ceremony and a “Grab and Go” lunch

  • Evening reception and dinner (Welcome glass of prosecco, 3 courses, coffee & petits fours plus half bottle of wine pp) with music entertainment on 5 July. The reception and the dinner will be held at the Craiglockhart Campus.

Cancellation policy:

Cancellations and amendments can be made up to 7 working days before the event for a full refund. After which a 50% charge will apply. No refund will be given for any cancellation made less than 24hours before the start of the event, unless extenuating circumstances exist – if you believe this is the case, please email UTSG2022@napier.ac.uk.

Craiglockhart Campus: Location and facilities

A detailed access guide to our Craiglockhart campus is available at Craiglockhart Building | AccessAble. The conference will be held in the Lindsay Stewart Lecture Theatre, Classrooms 2/05, 2/06, 2/07 and 2/09 and the Rivers Suite.  The dinner will be held in the Chapel.

Dinner for additional guests:

Conference attendees can purchase tickets for the reception and the dinner on 5 July at £45 per person. The tickets can be bought through the registration website.

University Accommodation:

A limited number of rooms are available at Edinburgh Napier University’s Orwell Terrace apartments from 3rd July until 7th July.  These are centrally located, with bars, restaurants and supermarket on the doorstep and just a 15-minute walk to the city centre, and 10-minute walk from Haymarket train station which links with the tram service to Edinburgh Airport.  All apartments feature individual lockable rooms with small double (4ft) beds & private en-suite bathrooms, plus a fully equipped communal kitchen/lounge area with flat screen television. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout and we provide all bed linen, bath & hand towels. More information can be found here.

The rooms can be booked for single occupancy (at £45 per person per night) or for double occupancy (at £55 per night per room). You can book a room by contacting vacation.lets@napier.ac.uk. When booking accommodation, please quote ‘UTSG2022’ and provide evidence of your conference booking (eg receipt, booking reference number).
