• Individuals’ perceived benefits and concerns were obtained through a web-based survey.
• Bivariate probit models of individuals’ perceptions are estimated.
• Unobserved heterogeneity is addressed through the use of grouped random parameters.
• Sociodemographic, behavioral, and attitudinal traits can determine public perceptions.
