Year 4 students show off their projects

Here are some images of the recent year 4 poster presentation day, the student’s chance to showcase their projects.  We had some guests from Shopify to judge the poster competition and present the prizes.  They were particularly impressed with the range of projects produced, but finally settled on Manon’s “CultureMapper” app which aims to engage young people with cultural experiences.  She followed a Design Thinking process and involved her users at each step to create an appealing prototype.  We’ll be sharing some of the projects in more detail over the next few months.

Rachele’s poster prize success at BCS Ada Lovelace Colloquium

Rachele Cavina, one of our final year BSc Digital Media students has come home with first prize in the final year category at the BCS Ada Lovelace Colloquium.  The event happens in April every year and brings together female students of Computing from across the country.  She used the event to showcase her honours project, which uses  Augmented Reality and animation to visualise DNA heritage.  You can see more of the project here – https://reci1996.wixsite.com/rachelecavina/copy-of-interactive-map

Featured Project: The Shellycoat by John Alder

These amazing images come from a recent project by our 4th year Digital Media student John Alder.  The 4th year are asked to revisit an old project and improve it to make it suitable for their portfolio.   John took a 2D character design from year 2 based on the Scottish myth of the Shellycoat and developed it into the 3D model seen here.

Featured Project: Blending Spaces in New York

Featured Project: Motion Graphics by Barna Imre

Barna Imre,  one of our year 3 Digital Media and Interaction Design students, describes his motion graphics projects as “kafkaesque nonsense”.  The piece has a strong visual style and challenges viewers to look a little more deeply at his work to discover some of the cultural references within.

Featured Project: Under the Weather by Murray Paterson

This Motion Graphic was created by Year 3 Digital Media Global Student Murray Paterson.

Murray says “The visual Inspiration behind Under the Weather was drawn from tiger aspect studio’s “Charlie and Lola”, where they create this really playful rough cut collage aesthetic by mixing hand drawn elements with chopped up photographs. I thought it would help give the piece a nice, light hearted kind of atmosphere. As for the inspiration for the story, my walk to uni had a big part to play really. For a month or so before the piece was due, walking through Bruntsfield links was comically windy. I was nearly getting blown off my feet day to day, plastic bags were terrorising civilians and i imagined men with toupees refusing to leave their homes. I found it all quite funny and thought it would be appropriate subject matter for our brief themed: ‘the environment’. “

Murray is off to Australia on placement in a few weeks – hope that the weather is better behaved for him there!

Featured Project: The Biggest Picture by Calum Parsons

This project is by year 4 Digital Media and Interaction Design student, Calum Parsons.   Calum says  “I wanted to experience working with green screens in an outdoor location on this project. The howling wind and rain on the day of the shoot certainly made it challenging, and dealing with it in post-production ruined my life for two weeks.  2/10 would not recommend. Turned out pretty okay though.  Fun module.”

Featured Project: The invisible Sixteen, game concept.

We are excited to share the pitch video for The invisible Sixteen – a concept for a game based on Burke and Hare that was created by Alan, Alba, Celina and James for their Digital Storytelling Coursework.  In the game, users must choose a character to play and then help to find missing people at various locations around Edinburgh. The team designed all aspects of the game, from user interactions and sound design to additional materials to help extend the experience.

Featured Project: Flint, Interactive Talking Book

Flint is a concept for an interactive talking book that was created by Silvia, Kaia, Adam & Katie for their Digital Storytelling Coursework.  The project is (loosely!) based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Tinderbox.  The team produced a comprehensive range of concept materials to help visualise their project.   As well as their pitch video, you can see here an interactivity map, various concept designs and plans to include Braille to make the project more accessible.   They even managed to find an abandoned wild west town, right here in Edinburgh!
