Prof Adrian Davis stood down as an Associate Editor at the end of 2020 having been one of the original Associate Editors under Professor Jenny Mindell’s leadership as Editor-in-Chief. What follows is a brief reflection on those seven years and also on sciences’ relationship with the political world and just how far science is influencing political decision-making in a climate, and ecological emergency.
Editorial: A seven year itch, and where to next? – Journal of Transport and Health
I first met Adrian in the 1980s, working together on a Green Travel Plan for Southampton University hospitals. We persuaded the local bus company to put on a service linking both main hospitals, door-to-door. It immediately became the most popular route in the whole city. The lessons I learnt then, and since, from him, influenced my subsequent work in public health across the SW. The 2020 paper he wrote with Obree is typical of the man, ranging from Mills and Burke on liberty to the opportunities provided for physical activity and health, by a very contemporary pandemic.
