Since 2016, there has been an open access agreement with Springer which Edinburgh Napier University has signed up to. This has allowed research articles by Napier-affiliated authors to be made open access in many Springer journals without needing to pay an APC (article processing charge).

Now, some Nature journals are going to be included in the latest update to the agreement, so researchers at Napier who publish in these journals can also make their articles open access. In all, full and immediate open access is now available for publishing in more than 2,500 Springer Nature titles, including Nature, the Nature research journals, and the Palgrave portfolio. Fully open access journals such as BioMed Central journals are not included in the agreement.
