Edinburgh Napier University has never had any central funds to pay for the costs of making research articles open access. Nevertheless, two-thirds of the articles published by Napier academics are now published as gold open access.

In 2023, 68% of articles (518/758) of the articles recorded in Napier’s repository were gold open access. 123 of these were through our read & publish deals, so a majority were made open through other means. Very little of this is due to paying APCs; the most common routes are either ‘diamond’ (APC-free) open access journals or co-authors’ institutions covering it (which in turn often means read and publish deals held by those institutions).
