The cost of open access
Executive Director of Jisc Digital Resources and CEO of Jisc Colections, Lorraine Estelle, has written a very thought provoking piece about the price of open access for higher education institutions in the UK. Articles which are free to use and read do incur costs in order to get them published eg. administration costs and APCs (Article Processing Charges). In addition, for hybrid journals institutions are also paying a subscription. These costs add up to substantial amounts for institutions to pay and it’s uncertain whether this is sustainable in the future.
