Dr Johnson Zhang and Dr Bernadino D’Amico won an award from the Construction Industry council in Hong Kong. The project partners include: Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi), Intelligent Wood Systems Ltd (IWS), Glenalmond Timber Company (GTC), Construction Scotland Innovation Centre (CSIC) and Balfour Beatty Plc (BB).
The funding will allow the Bamboo-Timber research group to develop an Augmented Virtual Reality Enhanced Design and Construction toolbox for Bamboo-Timber composite grid-shell structures and to conduct a construction trail at Edinburgh Napier University, Merchiston campus upper courtyard (subject to approval). The research outcomes and the construction phase will be developed as a training workshop for a group of civil engineering students from THEi. This research group were also successful in being awarded Royal Academy Engineering funding. Once completed, the Bamboo-Timber grid-shell structure will be the first Bamboo-Timber grid-shell in Europe.
