Duration of Study

The typical duration for the MRes program is:​

  • Full-time: 12 months​
  • Part-time: 24 months​ (not suitable for international students)

Eligibility Criteria

Successful applicants will:​

  • Demonstrate a passion for advancing knowledge and developing applications to improve society.​
  • Hold, or expect to achieve by the start of the program, a first-class honours degree or a distinction at the master’s level in a relevant subject.​
  • For non-native English speakers, meet the University’s English language requirements for research degree programmes.​
  • Commit to dedicating at least 36 hours per week to their research project, primarily based at the Merchiston Campus (10 Colinton Road, EH10 5DT).​

Application Process

Prospective applicants are encouraged to:

  1. Identify a Supervisor: Review the research profiles of our academic staff to find a potential supervisor whose expertise aligns with your research interests. Initiate contact to discuss your proposed project and its alignment with your qualifications.​
  2. Prepare Your Application: Your application should include:​
    • Research Proposal: A concise outline (up to two pages) detailing the background, motivation, research questions or objectives, methodology, and a list of references. This proposal should be independently developed by the applicant.​
    • Personal Statement: A one-page statement describing your motivations and fit with the proposed project.​
    • Curriculum Vitae: A recent and complete CV, including a declaration of your English language qualifications.​
    • References: Two academic references. If you have been out of education for more than three years, one professional reference may be substituted. Please use the reference form available on our website.​
  3. Submit Your Application: Applications can be submitted through our online system. Ensure you use the appropriate project code and title as specified in the project listing. Detailed instructions are available on our ‘How to Apply‘ page.​
