Apply for the Space Challenge

Accelerate the future of space innovation by taking your early-stage ideas, from concept to impact!

The recent Artemis II mission has reignited global imagination about what space can mean for our future. Scotland is already part of that future, and with the Space Challenge, your innovation could be too.

If you are developing an early-stage idea with the potential to transform the space sector, this programme offers a structured and supportive way to take that first bold step from concept to commercial possibility.

What is the Space Challenge?

Delivered by Converge in partnership with Space Scotland, the Space Challenge is more than a programme. It is a launchpad. Through carefully designed training, you will:

  • Test and validate your ideas in a safe and supportive environment
  • Stress test your thinking with peers and industry experts
  • Build confidence in the realities of entrepreneurship
  • Strengthen your understanding of how research can translate into real world impact

It is an ideal opportunity for Edinburgh Napier staff, students and recent graduates who are curious about commercialisation and want to explore the potential of their research in a growing and fast moving sector.

Who can apply?

The challenge is open to:

  • Staff, students and recent graduates from participating Scottish universities, including Edinburgh Napier University (ENU)
  • Working in disciplines in or related to the space sector
  • With projects at an early stage of development, typically TRL 2 to 5

You do not need a fully formed business plan. You only need a promising idea and the motivation to explore where it could go.

Is my project relevant?

This challenge is aimed at early-stage space sector projects with strong potential for long-term viability and meaningful impact. Converge is looking for ideas across both upstream and downstream activity.

Upstream
Innovations focused on new technologies within the space domain, such as:

  • Launchers
  • Satellites
  • Ground systems
  • Human spaceflight

Downstream
Ideas that use space systems or apply space technologies in non-space domains, including:

  • Applications and software
  • Satellite navigation
  • Earth observation
  • Satellite communications
  • Hardware, software or firmware solutions

If your research touches on any of these areas, or could be adapted to, it is worth exploring an application.

Key dates:

  • Application deadline: 21 May
  • In-person training programme: 1-3 July
  • Business case submission: 13 August
  • Final pitches: 15 September
  • Winner(s) announced at Awards: 1 October
