Research leadership has never been more important. As universities navigate an evolving research landscape, the ability to lead people, shape culture and develop strategic direction is critical to delivering impactful and sustainable research.
The Scottish Research Leaders Network Programme is a collaborative initiative designed to strengthen research leadership across Scotland’s higher education institutions (HEIs). By bringing together current and aspiring research leaders from across the sector, the network provides accessible, high-quality development opportunities that support individuals and institutions alike.
We are encouraging colleagues at Edinburgh Napier University to take advantage of the final sessions in this year’s programme and to share these opportunities within their own networks and research communities.
Why join the Scottish Research Leaders Network?
The programme aims to make research leadership development accessible across Scottish HEIs, creating opportunities to learn from peers, share experiences and develop the skills needed to lead successful research teams and environments.
Whether you are currently leading a research group, managing research activity or preparing for future leadership responsibilities, these sessions offer practical insights and valuable perspectives from colleagues across the sector.
Upcoming autumn sessions
Three sessions remain in this year’s programme:
15 September 2026: Challenging conversations and non-violent communication
Effective research leadership often requires navigating difficult conversations with empathy, clarity and confidence. This session will explore practical approaches to constructive dialogue, helping participants build stronger relationships and foster positive research cultures.
20 October 2026: Values and vision in research
Research leaders play a key role in shaping the values and direction of their teams and institutions. This session will focus on aligning personal and organisational values with a compelling research vision that inspires others and drives meaningful impact.
17 November 2026: Strategic thinking and planning for research
Strong research leadership requires the ability to think beyond immediate priorities and plan for long-term success. This session will examine strategic approaches to developing research activity, building capacity and delivering sustainable growth.
Book your place and help share the future of research leadership
As the network approaches the end of its current programme cycle, participant feedback and evaluation will help shape its future development. The autumn sessions therefore offer an excellent opportunity not only to enhance your own leadership practice, but also to contribute to the future of research leadership development across Scotland.
We would be grateful if colleagues could share these opportunities within your schools, research groups and professional networks, helping as many researchers as possible benefit from this valuable initiative.
Together, we can continue to strengthen research leadership across Scotland and support a thriving, collaborative research community.
Register today using the booking links above or in the Scottish Research Leaders Network Programme 2026 and share these opportunities with colleagues across Edinburgh Napier University and the wider Scottish research sector.
