As part of the government’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, Innovate UK have just announced funding available for an extra 200 Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) this year (17/18).
Edinburgh Napier University has an excellent track record of successfully securing KTP awards and this is a tremendous opportunity to increase the number of academics involved in KTP across the university. Innovate UK are keen to see this funding being used so now is a great time to apply for a KTP .
KTP involves the forming of a partnership between a company or organisation (the company partner) and the academic institute (knowledge-base partner), enabling the organisation to access skills and expertise to help it undertake strategic growth projects. Each partnership employs one or more high calibre Associates (graduate/post graduate) to facilitate this transfer of skills and expertise. The Associate works within the company/organisation on a project central to its needs and is jointly supervised by company personnel and an academic expert.
Projects can last 1–3 years and typically aim to introduce new or improved products or services, new or improved processes or systems, or management capabilities. KTP enables new capability to be embedded into the business and has benefited and continues to benefit a wide range of businesses across many sectors.
The benefits of KTP to academics are also wide ranging ; providing opportunities for the practical application of their research, applying knowledge and expertise to important problems facing organisations; developing business relevant research and teaching: publishing high quality journal and conference papers; REF impact case studies. Not to mention aligning closely with Edinburgh Napier’s Strategy 2020 to grow our academic reputation and increase knowledge exchange activities and growth of commercial and research income.
