Internal Funding Competitions
Research Funding Competition 2018-2019
RIO was delighted to see 45 applications submitted for this years Research Funding Competition, and after a rigorous two stage review process, 26 proposals were ultimately supplied with funding. Researchers across the University have now begun work on internally funded projects, and will update RIO on the interesting developments of their work.
Applications for the 2019-2020 competition will open in Spring 2019. Keep an eye out for communication on this in Trimester 2.
Researcher Development Fund 2018-2019
Applications are still being accepted for the Researcher Development Fund, with the deadline fast approaching on Friday 16th November. Following the deadline a panel will review applications and issue decisions before the end of Trimester 1.
Funding is available for initiatives which support personal, professional and career development for researchers. Awards are intended to enable doctoral students and early career research staff to initiate, design, manage and deliver new professional development activities for their peers which will in turn develop the skills and experience needed to progress their own careers.

Researcher Development Events
The Trimester So Far
RIO has put on a series of events so far in Trimester 1, which have seen researchers from a variety of schools and stages participate.
Annual internally facilitated sessions on examining and supervising research degrees have been held for new supervisors and examiners at ENU, providing essential support to those new to supervision.
The Research Student Induction was held in person and electronically to ensure all new research students could access the important information they need, and sessions have run regarding teaching, developing literature reviews, and thesis writing for research students of all levels.
RIO was also delighted to welcome some new sessions to this trimester’s researcher development schedule. External Researcher Development Facilitator ThinkWrite were invited to provide a session on writing quality papers, and a session has run regarding the use of creative practice in research.
Still to come in Trimester 1
Still to come in Trimester 1 are a number of externally facilitated events open to researchers from all backgrounds, as well as some more targeted sessions, all providing excellent opportunities for training and development.
Data Solutions Services have been invited to facilitate a session introducing researchers to SPSS with statistics (12th-13th November), and a session introducing researchers to NVivo 10 (14th-15th November).
On the 19th November GradFunding will be at the University’s Craiglockhart Campus to run an afternoon course on alternative ways to achieve grant funding.
Fistral Training will also facilitate a two day course titled ‘Project Management for Research’, which will run on the 29th and 30th of November.
Internally facilitated sessions will include; a session for late stage research students on what to expect from the Viva experience (13th November), a remote talk on research career development (6th December), and to end the years schedule, a writing retreat to be held off campus for those writing theses, articles or publications (10th-12th December).
