Episode 1: introduction

This episode sets the scene for the podcast series. Professor Pete Robertson introduces what we mean by career information. This includes a discussion of different types and format, and how services have evolved over time. Some of the challenges in accessing and sharing information are highlighted. The episode ends with a discussion of how information fits into career conversations – with some input from Susan Meldrum looking at how service users’ reactions to what they are hearing might shape the information they take in.

Episode 2: career information skills

This episode explores the skills needed to access, make sense of and act on career information. Marina Milosheva provides insights from her PhD research, which focuses on the concept of ‘career information literacy’. How do young people go about finding career information? What do they do with it? How can they acquire the skills to needed to make the best use of it? Navigating the information space is the focus of this episode.

Episode 3: automated career advice and information

This episode looks at automated career information. Marianne Wilson outlines some of the insights from her ongoing PhD project exploring the use of machine learning (artificial intelligence) in online interactions with career service users. How do people feel about getting advice and information from a non-human source? This episode considers how people might interact with self-service career information.

Episode 4: technology, equality and careers

This episode focuses on social justice. This means exploring the equality, diversity and inclusion issues that arise in the space where information technologies intersect with careers. Maria Cecil shares some of the learning from her PhD project looking at gender issues in digital technology careers. What does it mean for women to enter STEM careers?
Taking a very different angle on inclusion, Elysha Ramage in her PhD project is exploring the role of technology for those who are choosing alternatives to higher education. How did career information, and experiences of online study during the pandemic, shape these choices?
