Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, one of U!REKA partners, has launched a call for proposals (official link) ahead of an academic conference it will be holding on the 27th and 28th of November 2018.

The 3rd International Conference of the Urban Research and Education Knowledge Alliance is a platform for academic staff members of the consortium to present their work and to better understand the common and complementary expertise of colleagues working in the disciplines mentioned above.

The conference aims to:
a) Provide a venue for U!REKA members to network with academics working in the same field and develop collaborative applied work
b) build new research relationships finding trusted partners and collaborate on joint
funding applications (EU or international funding opportunities)
c) develop educational programs, joint programs and student projects
d) discuss and exchange best practices

The themes for this conference are as follows:

  • Migration and Urban Displacement
    How migrants and refugees are included in communities and higher education within urban European areas
  • Health and Wellbeing in Urban Environments
    Defining challenges and creating solutions for health and wellbeing in urban settings
  • Urban Sustainable Development
    Making the built environment more sustainable and ecological in rapidly growing cities
  • The Smart City
    How higher education institutions can help cities develop by using new technologies
  • Research and Innovation and the Urban Eco-System
    Defining the importance of the social impact of research on urban communities
  • Higher Education Research
    Research on improving higher education practices and policies

Contributions for joint project work to be further developed during the conference have to be submitted 1) to the abstract submission template (link here)  and 2) the new online-based visual platform Project Booster. The Project Booster helps U!REKA members to connect around ideas for joint collaborative work even before the conference. Please consider the guidelines for submission. Contributions for the workshops must include aspects for future collaborative work in the U!REKA alliance. You may decide to contribute with a short presentation about:

  1. about your research field
  2. a research project (ongoing or future research)
  3. of an applied project work
  4. a teaching program

How to take part in the call through Project Booster?
The abstracts for short presentations must be submitted no later than October 10th 2018 to the online submission template and the Project Booster (link here)

Is there funding available? : There is no fee required to attend the conference. There is limited funding available from central funding to assist Edinburgh Napier colleagues with travel and accommodation costs to attend the conference. Costs of U!REKA-related travel and accommodation will be split on a 50:50 basis with Schools, where the U!REKA fund will match the department’s contribution.

Process to apply for U!REKA funding:

  1. Please ensure you have secured internal support and funding from your School/department to attend the conference
  2. Please email Thomas Feige (t.feige@napier.ac.uk) with details of your proposal you are submitting for the conference, expected costs of travel and confirm you have support from your department.
  3. Following review, confirmation will be given for matched funding and colleagues will liaise with the school to match the funding.

Please note only staff who are affiliated to U!REKA institutions such as Edinburgh Napier may submit proposals. Unfortunately, the conference will be unable to accept contributions from other institutions at this time.
