On <\/span>October 8<\/span><\/b>, leaders from government, business, and technology came together at Edinburgh Napier University for an afternoon dedicated to one pressing question: <\/span>What if all businesses in Scotland were purposeful and circular?<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hosted by the <\/span>Centre for Business Innovation and Sustainable Solutions (CBISS)<\/span><\/b> in partnership with <\/span>Edinburgh B Corp<\/span><\/b>, the event explored how Scotland can turn circular ambitions into reality through collaboration and practical action, writes Kate Trofimova*<\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Associate Professor <\/span>Miles Weaver<\/span><\/b> opened the session by framing the conversation around Scotland\u2019s emerging leadership in sustainability and innovation. With the UK currently using <\/span>three times global resources than the planet can sustainably provide<\/span><\/b>, the message was clear: moving towards a circular economy is not optional \u2014 it\u2019s essential.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Scotland\u2019s Policy Roadmap for a Circular Economy \u2013 Maurice Golden MSP<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Maurice Golden MSP, long-time advocate for circular policy, set the tone with a challenge <\/span>\u201cPolicy is not about making things harder. It\u2019s about making them easy.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    He noted that while the UK has missed <\/span>nine out of twelve<\/span><\/b> major climate targets, Scotland is taking a more ambitious path through the <\/span>Circular Economy Bill<\/span><\/b> and the campaign for a <\/span>Better Business Act<\/span><\/b>, which seeks to make companies legally responsible for benefiting workers, communities, and the environment while still delivering profit.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Golden was clear: <\/span>\u201cWe need to make changes if we don\u2019t want to still be talking about Net Zero in thirty years.\u201d<\/span><\/i> He also reminded the audience that systemic change starts with individual behaviour \u2014 \u201cOnly 44% of people can sort their waste correctly. How can we talk about sustainable consumption if we can\u2019t even separate our rubbish?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    He cited <\/span>Wales<\/span><\/b> as proof that rapid progress is possible, with recycling rates now exceeding <\/span>65%<\/span><\/b>, driven by clear systems and public accountability. For Scotland, he argued, the opportunity lies in smarter design, better data, and rewarding sustainable business models like rentals, repairs, and reuse.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Embedding Sustainability in Everyday Products \u2013 Eilidh O\u2019Connor, Vegware<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Eilidh O\u2019Connor<\/span><\/b> from <\/span>Vegware<\/span><\/b> offered a practical vision for how circular thinking can work in everyday products.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Vegware, an Edinburgh-based pioneer in <\/span>compostable food packaging<\/span><\/b>, ensures its materials can be processed alongside food waste \u2014 returning nutrients to the soil rather than landfill. The company provides free waste consultancy and a simple five-step framework for change:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      1. Switch to compostable alternatives.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      2. Simplify waste streams and label bins clearly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      3. Communicate the system visually.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      4. Train and engage staff.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      5. Measure and share progress.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        O\u2019Connor emphasised that the key is <\/span>simplicity for the user<\/span><\/b>. \u201cIf a coffee cup is part plastic, part cardboard, part compostable \u2014 people won\u2019t separate it. They\u2019ll just throw it in the general bin.\u201d Effective circular systems make the right choice easy, not time-consuming.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        1. How Digital Tools Can Support Circular Business \u2013 Barry O\u2019Kane, HappyPorch<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Barry O\u2019Kane<\/span><\/b>, founder of <\/span>HappyPorch<\/span><\/b>, demonstrated how digital innovation underpins the circular economy. From <\/span>IoT sensors<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>data platforms<\/span><\/b> to <\/span>digital product passports<\/span><\/b>, technology now enables companies to trace materials across their entire lifecycle \u2014 allowing reuse, repair, and recycling at scale. HappyPorch\u2019s partnership with <\/span>Reath<\/span><\/b>, for example, helps businesses track reusable packaging across multiple cycles, ensuring transparency and compliance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          O\u2019Kane also made a crucial communication point: <\/span>\u201cSometimes it\u2019s not about what you ask, but how you ask.\u201d<\/span><\/i> Businesses often struggle to sell sustainability because they frame it as a cost. Instead, he argued, the focus should be on <\/span>long-term profitability<\/span><\/b> \u2014 showing how circular systems save money, extend product life, and improve efficiency over time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          1. Leveraging B Corp Certification for a Circular Scotland \u2013 Jayne Saywell<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Jayne Saywell<\/span><\/b> from the <\/span>Edinburgh B Corp 500<\/span><\/b> initiative explored how certification can hard-wire sustainability into business models. The <\/span>B Corp framework<\/span><\/b> assesses companies across five key dimensions \u2014 governance, workers, community, customers, and environment \u2014 through a rigorous <\/span>200-question impact assessment<\/span><\/b>. Recertification every three years ensures continual improvement rather than one-off compliance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

            Through Edinburgh <\/span>CAN B<\/span><\/b> and the <\/span>B Corp 500<\/span><\/b> programme, Saywell aims to help <\/span>500 Scottish businesses<\/span><\/b> achieve certification by <\/span>2030<\/span><\/b>, with <\/span>circularity<\/span><\/i> now one of the seven impact themes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

            She also offered a sharp reflection on behavioural change:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cValue is a hard thing to change \u2014 and I think we don\u2019t have time to change it. But ego? We can use it. You can make people feel good by being sustainable \u2014 an eco shower, a reusable cup. Maybe we don\u2019t need to fight ego; we just need to use it in the right way.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

            Her point landed: while awareness programmes in schools are vital, the change must happen now \u2014 and using people\u2019s natural motivations can accelerate it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

            Bringing It All Together<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

            The session concluded with a lively panel and closing reflections from <\/span>rapporteur Kate Trofimova<\/span><\/b>, who captured the spirit of the day:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cIf we keep these lessons in mind, we won\u2019t just be chasing the rainbow \u2014 we\u2019ll be building something tangible and lasting, together.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

            That shift from vision to action was clear throughout. As <\/span>Kate<\/span><\/b> reminded attendees, just last year at a <\/span>Balfour Beatty<\/span><\/b> sustainability workshop, participants expressed frustration over \u201cpolicy mismatches, mission fatigue, and lack of resources.\u201d A year later, the picture looks different: <\/span>policy is aligning<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>digital tools like HappyPorch\u2019s are enabling<\/span><\/b>, and <\/span>communities like Edinburgh Can B<\/span><\/b> are creating shared momentum.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
