A joint project by Edinburgh Napier University and Can Tho University<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

We spoke to Sukanlaya Sawang, the Director of Centre for Business Innovation and Sustainable Solutions (CBISS) at Edinburgh Napier University, on her work in support of an international collaboration to develop green skills for young people.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor\u00a0Sawang worked\u00a0as Project Lead\u00a0with researchers from ENU\u2019s\u00a0CBISS\u00a0(Jackie Brodie, Renata Osowska), and in collaboration with Can Tho University,\u00a0to help\u00a0those aged 18-30 in\u00a0Viet\u00a0Nam\u00a0learn\u00a0more about implementing sustainable practices into their businesses and local communities.\u00a0Both universities were\u00a0awarded\u00a0funding\u00a0under the Climate Skills Global Collaboration Grants, a global\u00a0programme\u00a0delivered by the British Council and supported by HSBC.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is\u00a0the Youth Green Innovation for Sustainable Enterprise\u00a0Programme?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is an applied research project that aims to build climate skills among young people in\u00a0marginalised\u00a0communities. At CBISS, we took what we learned from our research on sustainability and innovation and turned it into a practical\u00a0programme\u00a0running over six to nine months. The\u00a0programme\u00a0helps young people gain useful knowledge and skills for their future, while also supporting them to make a positive difference in their communities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>research\u00a0we used to build out the curriculum\u00a0examines\u00a0the\u00a0models of how people\u00a0and businesses\u00a0can\u00a0adopt green approaches.\u00a0<\/span>This includes\u00a0asking:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0What\u00a0stops them? What helps them? What encourages small and medium sized businesses to make changes?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s\u00a0not\u00a0about only\u00a0understanding climate change but\u00a0being able to use that understanding to embed it into businesses, or even simply bringing that knowledge into a community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What was your role with the\u00a0programme?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0I\u00a0was\u00a0the Project Lead, so I was looking after the overall direction of the project. At the beginning, I worked closely with our university partner in Viet Nam to shape the curriculum and make sure that our research on sustainability and innovation was behind what we were teaching.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Then I led the team to develop the curriculum and learning materials. We worked with the local partners to make sure the content\u00a0fitted\u00a0the local context and was practical and useful for the young people.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We wanted to use this\u00a0programme\u00a0as\u00a0a pilot\u00a0and learn from it. The aim was not only for\u00a0the young\u00a0people to become green innovators. We also wanted to give them the skills and confidence to become trainers in their own communities. They can then share what they have learned with other people, so the impact of the\u00a0programme\u00a0can continue to grow.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Can\u00a0you tell us about the participating students?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

For our first cohort, there were around 20\u00a0people\u00a0<\/span>aged between 18 and 30. Most participants recently graduated or are about to finish their\u00a0studies.\u00a0Some of them\u00a0have already\u00a0started businesses.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We ran an analysis of the student feedback and found that\u00a0in\u00a0terms of the awareness and understanding, the cohort gained confidence in their green knowledge,\u00a0climate change, the circular economy and how environmental, social, and economic values work together.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

18 out of the 20 students described that they already have an entrepreneurial project or will start a project after this. They all intended to share their learning with farmers, with other peers,\u00a0students, young people, people with disabilities and family members about this\u00a0programme.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the most rewarding aspect of working on this project?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

To<\/span>\u00a0be able to see the research that we have done translate into the real world. Our work goes beyond the\u00a0academic\u00a0paper that only scholarly people would read, but rather we can see something that will\u00a0directly\u00a0impact\u00a0the community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another\u00a0rewarding\u00a0part of this project\u00a0for me\u00a0is\u00a0working\u00a0with young people and particularly people that come from\u00a0marginalised\u00a0communities.\u00a0This cohort involved people from more rural communities and some\u00a0living with\u00a0disabilities.\u00a0I like to\u00a0think\u00a0we can give\u00a0this group more\u00a0opportunities to\u00a0brighten their future.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We also started a youth innovation lab in Viet\u00a0Nam.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a safe place for young people to test their ideas and get support from mentors. The mentors would be an experienced researcher, academic in a relevant area, or from the\u00a0business\u00a0industry to help give advice.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
