🎙️ Welcome to the Sound Design Society
Are you passionate about audio? Whether you’re intrigued by soundtracks, radio storytelling, ambient field recordings, or curious about sound in games, films, or podcasts, the Edinburgh Napier Sound Design Society is a space for students to create, collaborate, and explore sound together. Regardless of your experience level, you’re welcome here.
🧩 What We Do
We hold weekly meetups where members share projects, offer feedback, and learn from one another. These sessions are informal and supportive—perfect for working on Foley, field recordings, sound editing, or any audio-related project. Bring your laptop, your ideas, or just your ears.
🤝 Collaborate Across Courses
We team up with students from all sorts of backgrounds—film, games, music, journalism, theatre, and more. Whether you’re recording voiceover for a student animation or designing sound for an indie game prototype, this is a place to meet collaborators and make great things happen.
🚀 No Experience Needed
You don’t need to be studying sound design—or even know what a DAW is—to take part. Whether you’re a beginner or building a final-year portfolio, there’s something here for everyone. Just bring your curiosity and your willingness to learn.
🎧 Learn by Listening (and Walking)
We run field recording trips and sound walks around Edinburgh to help you build your own library of original recordings and explore how sound interacts with the world around us. These are a great chance to get hands-on with ambient sound and rediscover the city through your ears.
đź’ˇ Skills Sharing & Mini-Sessions
Our members often share tips, tools, and techniques—from cleaning dialogue in Adobe Audition to layering textures in Reaper or Logic. If you’ve got a method that works for you, you’re welcome to run a short mini-session. We also encourage informal peer mentoring, so there’s always someone to help you figure something out.
🎮 Get Involved Beyond Campus
We support members in participating in public-facing creative events like the Global Game Jam, 48 Hour Film Project, and the Edinburgh Short Film Festival. These are great opportunities to test your skills in real production environments and build your portfolio with finished work.
Whether you’re making a game in 48 hours or creating original sound for a rapid-fire short film, we’ll help you prep, find collaborators, and feel confident going in.
🏆 Share Your Work
We’ll help you get your work out there—whether that’s preparing for the Edinburgh Fringe, showcasing pieces at Society listening events, or submitting projects to student and professional festivals. We also plan to build a digital archive of member work, and run fundraisers to help cover entry fees when needed.
♿ Inclusive and Welcoming
If you have specific access needs or ideas for how we can be more inclusive, please let us know. We want the Society to be a space where everyone feels they can take part and contribute fully.
🧠Supportive, Not Competitive
We believe in constructive feedback, encouragement, and sharing knowledge. Whether you’re debugging a plugin chain or just want someone to listen to a work-in-progress, we’re here to help—without ego or pressure.
