Her thesis on \u201cVisions for woodland expansion in<br \/>\n21st Century Scotland: alternative governance strategies and ecosystem service implications\u201d<br \/>\nexplored how governance and who makes decisions, influences both woodland expansion and the<br \/>\necosystem services delivered.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking from her home in Edinburgh, Vanessa said \u201cThank you very much to both the Trust and<br \/>\nScottish Woodlands for this unexpected honour, and for the Trust\u2019s valuable support throughout my<br \/>\nPhD. The project enabled me to develop an interdisciplinary skillset, and to hopefully contribute in a<br \/>\nsmall way to the topical issue of woodland expansion in Scotland. I hope that I can continue to build<br \/>\non research approaches which both encourage and inform imaginative ways of thinking around<br \/>\nsustainable land use and how woodlands and forestry could be integrated within this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ralland Browne, Managing Director of Scottish Woodlands Ltd and a Trustee of the Scottish Forestry<br \/>\nTrust, said \u201cI am delighted that the Scottish Woodlands Student Excellence Award this year is being<br \/>\npresented to Vanessa and I wish her every success in her future career. The research that Vanessa<br \/>\nhas undertaken on the varying stakeholder visions of woodland expansion in Scotland will help to<br \/>\ninform how we can best achieve Scottish Government\u2019s ambitious planting targets. Forestry delivers<br \/>\na wide range of public benefits and achieving a good balance of these is something we at Scottish<br \/>\nWoodlands strive to deliver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Trustees also awarded a Special Award to Dr David Gil-Moreno, now a researcher at National<br \/>\nUniversity of Ireland Galway working in the Woodprops programme, recognising his PhD completed<br \/>\nat the Forest Products Research Institute, Napier University Edinburgh. David\u2019s thesis was on<br \/>\n\u201cPotential for noble fir, Norway spruce, western red cedar and western hemlock grown for timber<br \/>\nproduction in Great Britain\u201d and was felt by the Trustees to be a technically excellent piece of work.<br \/>\nDavid whose current role involves the characterisation of Irish-grown timber species for the best<br \/>\nutilisation of forest resources and the diversification of the timber supply said \u201cI cannot stress enough<br \/>\nhow grateful I am to The Scottish Forestry Trust for supporting my PhD. As we are becoming more<br \/>\naware of climate change and the consequences that it will bring it seems more evident the need to<br \/>\nuse low embodied carbon materials in construction and to diversify the timber supply. My thesis<br \/>\nshowed that there are species with structural quality and merchantability that can contribute to<br \/>\ndiversifying the timber industry in Great Britain. I am extremely proud of the work leading to my PhD<br \/>\nthesis, and this award means a great deal to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr Keith Kirby, Chair of the Scottish Forestry Trust\u2019s Projects and Research Committee noted \u201cWe are<br \/>\nentering a time of great change for forestry. If we are to make the most of the opportunities for an<br \/>\nexpansion of tree cover and of the benefits that trees and woods bring, we need good research to<br \/>\nunderpin what we do. That is why the Scottish Forestry Trust is delighted to recognise the work of<br \/>\nyoung researchers through its Student Excellence Award which is supported by Scottish Woodlands.<br \/>\nWe are also grateful to the Forestry Commission, Scottish Forestry and Natural Resources Wales<br \/>\nwho have co-funded our Bursary Scheme which over a 10 years period has supported 23 research<br \/>\nstudentships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.napier.ac.uk\/research-and-innovation\/research-search\/outputs\/potential-of-noble-fir-norway-spruce-western-red-cedar-and-western-hemlock-grown-for\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Gil-Moreno<\/a><\/p>\n<p>David still works with us, is now based at NUI Galway and recently been working on this joint <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuigalway.ie\/about-us\/news-and-events\/news-archive\/2017\/may2017\/minister-launches-initiative-at-nui-galway-to-support-irish-timber-industry.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This includes collaboration on wood properties and standardisation work.
