SUMMARY:The National Biofilm Innovation Centre - Sighthill meeting
DESCRIPTION:Dr Katerina Steventon\, Senior Innovation Consultant from  The National Biofilm Innovation Centre  is coming over to ENU Sighhill Campus Monday  30th of September 1300 till 2.30pm (room to be confirmed) \nThe National Biofilms Innovation Centre is an Innovation Knowledge Centre (IKC) jointly funded by the BBSRC\, Innovate UK\, and the Hartree Centre. The NBIC aim to connect  scientists specialising in Biofilms across the UK\, and to provide a mechanism for industrial partners to explore their unmet needs with NBIC researchers . With NBIC roadmapping sessions and conferences\, they aim to facilitate the exchange of problems \, solutions and ideas in the biofilms sector. Through their PhD and Post-Doc programs\, NBIC will nurture researchers to grow their expertise . NBIC will also provide entrepreneur training to our researchers to help them better understand  the commercial environment  and encourage the start-up of Micro and SME businesses. \nThe School of Applied Science has form links with the National Biofilm Innovation Centre and the University is now a member of the NBIC. This allows us to have a access to different resources and has a great opportunity for funding calls via the NBIC. More information:  https://biofilms.ac.uk/category/open-funding-calls/ \nNational Biofilm Innovation Centre \nKaterina is keen to learn more on the kind of research that is taking place in the University that links with the NBIC wide remits and industry. \nIf you would like to attend the meeting please contact: \nNina Hakanpaa n.hakanpaa@napier.ac.uk \nor \nSimone Dallas  s.Dallas@napier.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Energy Review 2019: global megatrends and opportunities for UK plc
DESCRIPTION:The School of Engineering and the Built Environment staff are invited to the annual Energy Review event with the President of the Energy Institute\, Malcolm Brinded\, CBE FREng FEI. \nThe world’s population is expected to hit ten billion in the second half of this century\, up from 7.5 billion today. More than two thirds of the global population will live in urban centres by 2050\, up from just over half today. And global average temperature could increase by 4+ degrees Celsius without major action to reduce emissions – with the Paris commitment of 2oC and the IPCC recommended limit of 1.5oC looking very tough to achieve. \nPopulation growth\, mass urbanisation and climate change – global megatrends are shaping the world in which we live\, with unprecedented implications for governments\, industries and wider society. \nHow do we turn these global challenges into opportunities – and build a world in which everyone\, irrespective of where they live\, has access to affordable\, reliable and sustainable energy? \nIt calls for tremendous ingenuity across the global energy system\, not least in the UK – an early mover in decarbonising our own energy system\, and home to significant technological capabilities and some promising solutions for the future\, which could flourish in serving these emerging global markets. \nMalcolm will draw on more than four decades of personal and professional experiences as Board Director of Royal Dutch Shell plc\, together with his perspective at the helm of Energy Institute\, to explore how these megatrends are driving the global energy transition and the opportunities for UK plc. \nBook your Place: \nFor further details\, or to book a place\, please contact:\nGary Howorth (Hon. Secretary) gary.howorth@energy-redefined.com \nIt is anticipated that this event shall be popular\, so please confirm your place early.
