{"id":484,"date":"2017-09-04T10:26:37","date_gmt":"2017-09-04T10:26:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/rio\/?p=484"},"modified":"2017-10-18T09:11:40","modified_gmt":"2017-10-18T09:11:40","slug":"ref2021-initial-decisions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/rie\/ref2021-initial-decisions\/","title":{"rendered":"REF2021 &#8211; Initial Decisions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Autumn 2017, so right on cue&#8230;&#8230;.The Funding Bodies&#8217; <span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 10.5pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hefce.ac.uk\/pubs\/rereports\/year\/2017\/ref201701\/\">initial decisions on the next REF<\/a> <\/span>have been published.<\/p>\n<p>A summary of the information is captured below:<\/p>\n<p>-Assessment outcomes will be the products of expert review, informed by indicators where appropriate.<br \/>\n-Profile weightings will be as follows;\u00a0Outputs 60%; Impact 25%;\u00a0Environment 15%.<br \/>\n-Several UOAs have been revised: \u00a0A single UOA for engineering; UOA 17 to be restructured to form\u00a0UOA 14 Geography and Environmental studies and UOA 15 Archaeology; Film and Screen studies will be located in UOA 33 (currently 35) Music, Drama, Dance, Performing Arts and Screen Studies.<br \/>\n-There will be <strong>no institutional level Impact case studies<\/strong> though they will run a pilot which will affect future exercises.<br \/>\n-There will be <strong>no institutional level Environment statement<\/strong>. Institutional level information will be included in the UOA-level environment template.<br \/>\n-The environment template will be more structured and use more quantitative data.<br \/>\n-There will be a \u201cdiscrete\u201d section of the UOA environment template devoted to interdisciplinary research.<br \/>\n-There will be no impact template but it will be an \u201cexplicit section in the environment element\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nImpact<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong>There will be an alignment of the definitions for impact so that Research Council definitions of \u2018academic impact\u2019 and \u2018wider impact\u2019 align with the purposes of the REF.<br \/>\n-There will be additional guidance on the criteria of \u2018reach and significance\u2019 and impacts arising from public engagement<br \/>\n-Impact on teaching will include teaching within the university as well as beyond.<br \/>\n-The impact case study template will be revised to include a set of mandatory fields.<br \/>\n-Impact will stay with the institution where the research was conducted.<br \/>\n-Underpinning research will remain at 2*.<br \/>\n-The period for underpinning research will be 1 January 2000- 31 December 2020.<br \/>\n-Impact can occur from 1 August 2013 to 31 July 2020.<br \/>\n-Case studies can be a continuation of a 2014 Case study but they will need to provide evidence of additional impact.<br \/>\n-A similar number of case studies will be required. Further work is needed to determine the criteria.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;meatier&#8217;\u00a0decisions around staff eligibility and portability of outputs have not yet been announced.\u00a0The Funding Bodies are\u00a0inviting further views on the proposed approaches as outlined <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hefce.ac.uk\/rsrch\/ref2021\/events\/\">a recent webinar<\/a>, which RIO will be responding to in due course.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Autumn 2017, so right on cue&#8230;&#8230;.The Funding Bodies&#8217; initial decisions on the next REF have been published.
