Creating a new interdisciplinary Scottish\u2013European Network of Research Leaders<\/span><\/p>\n

_<\/span><\/p>\n

Calling early\/mid-career research leaders from life, physical, engineering, computational, mathematical, environmental and social sciences, arts and humanities in Scotland and Europe.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

On behalf of Scottish Crucible, the University of Luxembourg, Scottish Research Pools and partner institutions, you are cordially invited to apply for a place on the forthcoming \u2018European Crucible\u2019 which will gather Scottish future research leaders with their counterparts from across Europe<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recognising the importance of international research collaboration<\/span><\/b>, and following the success of Scottish Crucible over the past decade, this European Crucible will stimulate new international research collaborations between Scottish and European researchers. The meeting will create a new network for research leaders between Scotland and Europe, and enable international collaboration on interdisciplinary research and innovation topics with additional engagement with policy-makers and industry. This first European Crucible event will have an emphasis on innovative collaborations at the interfaces between Life Sciences and other disciplines.<\/span><\/p>\n

A bespoke Crucible event<\/span><\/b>: This \u2018Crucible-style\u2019 workshop is sponsored by the Scottish Government via the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) to explore the scope and potential for an ambitious expansion of Scottish-European research collaboration through the creation of new interdisciplinary partnerships that address global challenges. The two-day event is an intensive, interactive, workshop for selected participants, each day comprising a range of inspiring speakers, collaborative discussions, site visits and networking sessions. The expert facilitator is writer and broadcaster Vivienne Parry, OBE, a UKRI Board member; keynote speakers include Prof Rory Duncan, Director of Talent and Skills, UKRI.<\/span><\/p>\n

This inaugural European Crucible<\/span><\/b> event is organised by the Research Futures Academy of Heriot-Watt University (home of Scottish Crucible), and the University of Luxembourg on behalf of the network of Scottish Research Pools and their institutional partners. Research Pooling has created research alliances of Scottish universities and research institutes with the aim of enhancing world class research competitiveness and advanced training through strategic cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n


\n<\/span> Venue, Timings and Networking Dinner:<\/span><\/b> The main venue for the European Crucible on 6th and 7th of May 2020 is the University of Luxembourg, Belval campus with some elements held in other institutions in Luxembourg City (e.g. the European Investment Bank Headquarters). The event will comprise of two full days of activities (to maximise positive outcomes of the Crucible, participants must commit to attending for the full, two day programme). The first day (09:00 \u2013 17:30) will be followed by a specially hosted reception and networking dinner (17:30- 22:00) for all Crucible participants to which additional senior guests from academia, policy, industry and business will be also invited. The second day will run from 08:30 \u2013 17:00. Further logistical\/programme details will be provided beforehand to those who have been selected to participate on this occasion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Applying to join the European Crucible:<\/span><\/b> We are keen to bring together a broad cross-section of researchers from different disciplines in academia and industry to identify collaborative research opportunities that span disciplines and sectors. Priority will be given to those who show evidence of being capable of contributing to building an ambitious European-Scotland network across disciplines and organisations. Applicants should be at senior postdoctoral level and above, with experience of leading projects and securing funding, or have relevant industry\/research institute experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you would like to be considered<\/span><\/b> for a place on the European Crucible in Luxembourg, please complete and submit this short application form briefly explaining your subject area(s), any experience you may have in collaborating across sectors or disciplines, and why you should be invited to participate in this event. To enhance interaction, participation will be limited to 50 in total with half from Scotland.<\/span><\/p>\n
