The vital role of Scottish universities’ research and innovation

New SFC campaign highlights the crucial role of Scottish universities in society

Edinburgh Napier University is proud to have contributed to the Scottish Funding Council’s latest showcase campaign, ‘Playing a Vital Role’, which highlights the transformative impact of university research across Scotland.

This national campaign celebrates how academic innovation is helping to tackle some of society’s most pressing challenges—from public health to sustainability and economic growth.

Launched in June 2025, the ‘Playing a Vital Role’ campaign showcases how universities are addressing four of the Scottish Government’s key priorities:

  1. Eradicating child poverty
  2. Growing Scotland’s economy
  3. Tackling the climate emergency
  4. Improving public services

Through a new collection of case studies, the campaign demonstrates how academic research is delivering real-world solutions, shaping policy, and improving lives both locally and globally. The initiative aims to raise public awareness of the essential role universities play in building a fairer, greener, and more prosperous Scotland.

Edinburgh Napier – home of difference makers

This campaign highlights some case studies that exemplify Edinburgh Napier’s commitment to translating research into practical, impactful solutions, including:

Saving lives with naloxone: A public health breakthrough

One standout case study led by Edinburgh Napier provided critical evidence supporting the use of Naloxone nasal spray by Police Scotland officers. This life-saving intervention allows officers to administer immediate first aid in cases of opioid overdose – an urgent public health issue in Scotland. The research has directly influenced policy and practice, equipping frontline responders with the tools to save lives.

Pioneering cardiovascular health research

Another area of impact is the university’s Centre for Cardiovascular Health, where researchers are working to improve the detection and management of cardiovascular disease. This work not only aims to enhance patient outcomes but also explores ways to reduce financial strain on the NHS through earlier intervention and better care pathways.
