An ORCID number is a unique identifying code that a researcher keeps throughout\u00a0their professional career. It’s quick and easy to register and receive your\u00a0ORCID number (or iD) from the ORCID website<\/a>. Names can change and middle name initials may\u00a0be used, or perhaps not, and all of this makes identifying an individual researcher potentially quite difficult, especially if you add in the complication of a\u00a0more common name or surname. Hence the reason for having an ORCID iD. Increasingly, funders are stipulating that researchers must\u00a0have an ORCID iD\u00a0at the point of submitting their funding applications.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, ORCID published their ORCID\u00a0Open Letter – Funders<\/a>\u00a0which outlines\u00a0the benefits to researchers of having an ORCID iD\u00a0and also\u00a0named the funders who have\u00a0signed up to\u00a0implementing ORCID iDs in at least one workflow in accordance with their Best practices for funding organizations<\/a>. So far there are nine funders listed including the Wellcome Trust, the Royal Society and UK Research and Innovation but expect the list to grow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
