The fine is a\u00a0hefty\u00a0$15 million, or \u00a311.8 million to compensate them for\u00a0their loss of income. What next for the file sharing sites? Presumably they&#8217;ll have to pay up. Perhaps other publishers are waiting to see the outcome before instigating\u00a0their own\u00a0court cases. What will the impact be on SciHub, LibGen\u00a0et al?\u00a0Only time will tell.<\/p>\n<p>Putting the court case aside,\u00a0you can feel the\u00a0frustration experienced by researchers and the lengths\u00a0they&#8217;ll go to\u00a0to obtain\u00a0articles\u00a0they have difficulty finding and accessing\u00a0through &#8216;traditional&#8217; routes. Frustration with embargoes. Frustration with paywalls.\u00a0Accessing an article\u00a0isn&#8217;t the smooth, seamless, user-centred experience it should be.\u00a0So what happens? They bypass the publishers\u00a0who they feel are responsible for\u00a0blocking access to\u00a0what they need. And this is where SciHub, LibGen and others come in.<\/p>\n<p>As we&#8217;ve seen, <a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.napier.ac.uk\/copyright\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">copyright<\/a> infringement is not something to take lightly.\u00a0So how do you legally get hold of the articles (and also books) you need if <a href=\"http:\/\/my.napier.ac.uk\/Library\/helpcentre\/Pages\/find-a-book.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the\u00a0Library at Edinburgh Napier University doesn&#8217;t have<\/a> them? There is a well-established request service (<a href=\"http:\/\/staff.napier.ac.uk\/services\/library\/finding-information\/Pages\/InterLibraryLoans.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Inter-Library Loans<\/a>) which we use to get hold of material in electronic or print format. Electronic material is usually delivered to your university email account. Print materials\u00a0take more time as they are usually posted to the University before being\u00a0collected by the requester.<\/p>\n<p>Just to make it a bit easier, we recently introduced an online request form for inter-library loans. You can use this on and off campus to send us your requests.
