Hijacked journals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You&#8217;ve probably heard of <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/open-access\/decisiontree\/journals\/\">predatory journals <\/a>that actively and sometimes aggressively\u00a0seek researchers to publish their articles in their journals, well, there&#8217;s something else to watch out for&#8230;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfoap.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/10\/hijacked-journals\/\" target=\"_blank\">hijacked journals<\/a>. These are journals which have been created by fraudsters to\u00a0copy very closely the reputable journals that researchers want to publish their work in. The hijacked versions\u00a0look like the real thing. But they&#8217;re not! Along comes an unsuspecting researcher who wants to publish in a reputable journal but if they come across, or are contacted by the hijacked version, give them some\u00a0money to cover\u00a0fees or article processing charges&#8230;you can probably guess what happens next. Yes, that&#8217;s right, nothing. The researcher has lost their money and their article\u00a0is not published.<\/p>\n<p>So how can you avoid being the victim of a hijacked journal?\u00a0What do you do if you receive\u00a0an unsolicited invitation to publish your work in\u00a0what looks\u00a0like a reputable journal? <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkchecksubmit.org\/check\/\" target=\"_blank\">Find out more <\/a>about\u00a0your target journal. Ask colleagues\u00a0about their experiences with\u00a0specific journals and if they&#8217;ve worked with them, get a contact name if\u00a0that&#8217;s possible. Does the journal exist? Have a look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/doaj.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Directory of Open Access Journals <\/a>to see if the journal you want to publish in is open access, an essential requirement for <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/open-access\/decisiontree\/ref-2021\/\">the next REF<\/a>. Is it a predatory journal? Take a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarlyoa.com\/publishers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Beall&#8217;s List<\/a>,\u00a0compiled by an Amercian librarian, Jeffrey Beall. This fairly long list of &#8216;Potential, possible or probable predatory scholarly open access publishers&#8217;\u00a0are those publishers who meet <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarlyoa.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/01\/criteria-2015.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">his\u00a0criteria <\/a>for being considered predatory publishers. There are some really good questions in this criteria list and ones you should ask yourself about if you have even a vague suspicion you&#8217;ve been contacted by a predatory publisher or hijacked journal.<\/p>\n<p>Ask lots of questions!
