{"id":449,"date":"2018-11-13T08:30:54","date_gmt":"2018-11-13T08:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/miles-weaver\/?p=449"},"modified":"2018-11-13T12:57:33","modified_gmt":"2018-11-13T12:57:33","slug":"reflecting-trusteehour-12-charity-trustees-paid-role-remain-voluntary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/miles-weaver\/2018\/11\/13\/reflecting-trusteehour-12-charity-trustees-paid-role-remain-voluntary\/","title":{"rendered":"reflecting on #trusteehour 12 \u2018Should charity trustees be paid, or should the role remain voluntary?&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"twitter-hashtag pretty-link js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/trusteehour?src=hash\"><s>#<\/s><b>trusteehour<\/b><\/a>\u00a012 took place in November, with a theme selected by <a class=\"twitter-atreply pretty-link js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CumbriaUni\"><s>@<\/s><b>CumbriaUni<\/b><\/a> students &#8211; <em>\u2018Should charity trustees be paid, or should the role remain voluntary?&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"username u-dir u-textTruncate\" dir=\"ltr\"><a class=\"account-group js-account-group js-action-profile js-user-profile-link js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IVSGB\">The International Voluntary Service @<b>IVSGB<\/b><\/a>\u00a0kicked off the hour with a poll on the question posed. 86% of participants agreed that the role should remain voluntary which dominated the conversation with some thoughts on the influence of rumuneration and whether this would attract different voices into the sector. @BCharitable also provided a useful context to the discussion by recognising the professionalism of the sector and that the contribution of trustees should be recognised, encouraged and supported.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/trusteehour?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#trusteehour<\/a> whatever the answer or prevailing view on remuneration for trustees, the professionalism of the sector &amp; effective boards should be recognised, encouraged and supported<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Brodies Charity Law (@BCharitable) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BCharitable\/status\/1052636236173758464?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 17, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There were a number of threads\/points raised:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>whether rumuneration would attract more younger trustees \u00a0(<span class=\"username u-dir u-textTruncate\" dir=\"ltr\"><a class=\"account-group js-account-group js-action-profile js-user-profile-link js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IVSGB\">@<b>IVSGB)<\/b><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>or even attract trustees with a genuine interest in the cause and desire to drive the organisation forward (<a class=\"account-group js-account-group js-action-profile js-user-profile-link js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LaurenPluss\"><span class=\"username u-dir u-textTruncate\" dir=\"ltr\">@<b>LaurenPluss)<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>(unpaid) board with all the legal duties &amp; risk and (paid) executives without directly the same duties &amp; risk\u00a0@BCharitable<\/li>\n<li>different dynamics between the CEO and the relationships with the rest of the board\u00a0<a class=\"account-group js-account-group js-action-profile js-user-profile-link js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/talktokieran\"><span class=\"username u-dir u-textTruncate\" dir=\"ltr\">@<b>talktokieran<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"stream-item-header\">\n<div class=\"ProfileTweet-action ProfileTweet-action--more js-more-ProfileTweet-actions\">\n<div class=\"dropdown\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>There were many comments that training should be mandatory to improve standards of governance (@Menai_OJ) and removing of barriers such as travel and other expenses being made available without stigma (<span class=\"username u-dir u-textTruncate\" dir=\"ltr\"><a class=\"account-group js-account-group js-action-profile js-user-profile-link js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sus_Hunter20\">@<b>Sus_Hunter20<\/b><\/a>). @Sus_Hunter20 also noted that timing for meetings is important so that trustees that are in work (comment made in the context of #youngtrustees) don&#8217;t lose income or have to take leave to attend.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"username u-dir u-textTruncate\" dir=\"ltr\"><a class=\"account-group js-account-group js-action-profile js-user-profile-link js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LaurenPluss\">@<b>LaurenPluss <\/b><\/a><\/span>suggested that it is important to promote the positive impact that \u00a0involvement can have on an individual as well as an organisation.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe making training mandatory when taking up the role of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/trustee?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#trustee<\/a> would help standards of governance, instead of paying trustees. I suppose the question is, what are we trying to achieve by paying trustees? <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/trusteehour?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#trusteehour<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Menai Owen-Jones (@Menai_OJ) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Menai_OJ\/status\/1052638725593858049?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 17, 2018<\/a><\/p>\n<p>@maltdub posed a very interesting thought that aroused some debate:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">What about trustees being able to claim Gift Aid on the market value of their service to the charity? <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/trusteehour?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#trusteehour<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oUwhMf8zad\">https:\/\/t.co\/oUwhMf8zad<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 James Spedding \u0646 (@maltdub) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/maltdub\/status\/1052640517182447617?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 17, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>@weavermiles saw the merit in the principle but commented that you need to be paying tax for this model to work. Yet we want more young people, to attract all earning levels and of course, the majority of the trustees are retired.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">There is something in this and love the principle. BUT many we want to encourage might not pay income tax &#8211; young people, the retired &amp; low earners. Boards need to be more representative <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/trusteehour?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#trusteehour<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/sorry?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#sorry<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/keepwithprinciple?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#keepwithprinciple<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Miles Weaver (@Weavermiles) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Weavermiles\/status\/1052642789501128714?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 17, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A key theme that re-occurs each month is the need for training and a good induction:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/trusteehour?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#trusteehour<\/a> mandatory training a really good point. A good number of formal inquiries into issues at charities note the lack of induction and ongoing training for trustees&#8230; so they &#8216;get&#8217; what it is to be a charity trustee<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Brodies Charity Law (@BCharitable) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BCharitable\/status\/1052641235033382915?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 17, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One way of supporting this is to encourage more organisations to have a policy on volunteering and talking up #SkilledVolunteering. Trusteeship being the ultimate of skilled volunteering?\u00a0<span class=\"username u-dir u-textTruncate\" dir=\"ltr\"><a class=\"account-group js-account-group js-action-profile js-user-profile-link js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OfficialCause4\">@<b>OfficialCause4<\/b><\/a>\u00a0supported this by suggesting that corporates can do more to allow time to support volunteering. Effectively, the worker is paid but can gain new skills and experiences too in the form of a trusteeship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">How about encouraging more organisations to have a policy on volunteering and actively encouraging <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/trusteeship?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#trusteeship<\/a>? Many offer 3 &#8211; 5 days of unpaid leave.
