It is one of the most widely used in the world.<\/p>\n<h2>Use<\/h2>\n<p>The DDC as it is shortened to, is used to organise books by subject. Each item is given a shelf mark identifier so it can be located easily. The main subject areas are:<\/p>\n<p>000 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Computer science, information, and general work<\/p>\n<p>100 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Philosophy and psychology<\/p>\n<p>200 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Religion<\/p>\n<p>300 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Social sciences<\/p>\n<p>400 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Language<\/p>\n<p>500 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Science<\/p>\n<p>600 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Technology<\/p>\n<p>700 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Art and recreation<\/p>\n<p>800 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Literature<\/p>\n<p>900 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 History and geography<\/p>\n<p>The first 3 digits are the main subject area.\u00a0 The numbers after the point give a subsection. After the numbers there are 3 letters to represent the author or editor.
