{"id":541,"date":"2026-06-12T13:19:02","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T13:19:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/enuapplyscience\/?p=541"},"modified":"2026-06-12T13:20:40","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T13:20:40","slug":"jess-delivers-early-career-researcher-keynote-for-freshwater-biological-association","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/enuapplyscience\/2026\/06\/12\/jess-delivers-early-career-researcher-keynote-for-freshwater-biological-association\/","title":{"rendered":"Jess delivers Early Career Researcher Keynote for Freshwater Biological Association"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year\u2019s Annual Scientific Meeting for the Freshwater Biological Association (FBA) &#8211; held on 11 June at Edinburgh Napier University &#8211; explored the theme of &#8220;Emerging approaches for freshwater science&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Across many parts of the world, freshwater habitats &#8211; which host 10 times the biodiversity per area than the land or sea &#8211; remain at critical risk from climate change. Freshwater vertebrate populations are declining (at a rate almost double that of those on land and in the sea) and rising levels of water pollution are combining with this widespread degradation in freshwater ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>But advances in robotics, biotechnology, AI, and remote sensing are all expanding the amount and the quality of data available to academics and policy makers exponentially.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge now &#8211; and the opportunity &#8211; is immense; and the FBA works internationally to reverse the decline in freshwater biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s meeting explored a range of new approaches to freshwater science, including bio\/hydro acoustics, eDNA, citizen science, drones and the emerging role of machine learning for pattern recognition.<\/p>\n<p>The event shone a spotlight on these cutting-edge methodologies, which are driving action-focused, independent science to help understand and conserve freshwater habitats globally.<\/p>\n<p>The event included keynotes from Jennifer Dodd, Associate Professor from Edinburgh Napier University\u2019s <a class=\"ReJIiZrEIwwPdckdQGseIoewjTGNezPmfPE \" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/centre-for-conservation-restoration-science\/\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Centre for Conservation &amp; Restoration Science (CCRS)<\/a>; Bernd H\u00e4nfling, UHI Inverness; Brian Hayden Atomic Ecology; and the prestigious early career researcher keynote: delivered this year by <a id=\"ember4252\" class=\"ember-view\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jess-lister-27a714164\/\">Jess Lister<\/a>, a PhD student in Edinburgh Napier \u2019s School of Applied Sciences.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_543\"
