The course, starting in September, will develop pedagogical content knowledge and improve confidence of teachers to deliver high quality learning experiences.<\/p>\n<h2>CPD has a positive impact<\/h2>\n<p>The Scottish Government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/binaries\/content\/documents\/govscot\/publications\/strategy-plan\/2017\/10\/science-technology-engineering-mathematics-education-training-strategy-scotland\/documents\/00526536-pdf\/00526536-pdf\/govscot%3Adocument\/00526536.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Science Technology Engineering Mathematics: Education and Training Strategy for Scotland<\/a> aims for <em>\u201c<\/em>increased practitioner engagement in STEM professional learning opportunities\u201d, and the Education Endowment Foundation have <a href=\"https:\/\/d2tic4wvo1iusb.cloudfront.net\/documents\/support-for-schools\/bitesize-support\/EEF_Attainment_Gap_Report_2018_-_print.pdf?v=1631274786\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">linked high-quality teaching to closing the poverty related attainment gap<\/a>. Research has shown that effective professional learning has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stem.org.uk\/system\/files\/elibrary-resources\/2019\/10\/science-teacher-retention_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">positive impact on teacher retention<\/a>. It is clear from these findings that high-quality subject-specific CPD has a positive impact in a number of key areas.<\/p>\n<p>The idea for this course arose from the Planned in Scotland for Scottish Teachers series of events organised in partnership between Edinburgh Napier University and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royal Society of Chemistry<\/a>. The engagement with and feedback from these sessions confirmed a real appetite for subject-specific professional learning with the chemistry teaching community in Scotland.<\/p>\n<h2>Developing chemistry teachers professional knowledge<\/h2>\n<p>The course will provide a series of CPD sessions for chemistry teachers in Scotland, targeted at developing their pedagogical content knowledge. The overall aim of the CPD is to improve the confidence of teachers in delivering high-quality learning experiences, help close the poverty-related attainment gap, and improve teacher retention.<\/p>\n<p>The course will develop chemistry teachers\u2019 professional knowledge and understanding in the following areas: cognitive load theory; questioning; feedback; effective use of practical work; chemistry-specific literacy; chemistry-specific numeracy; explanations; formative assessment; self-evaluation of teaching.<\/p>\n<p>Successful completion of the course will be displayed by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increased professional knowledge and understanding of how to support learning in the chemistry classroom<\/li>\n<li>Reflecting on current practice and on the impact of the learning from the sessions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Register for the course<\/h2>\n<p>This course will be of benefit to chemistry teachers at all stages of their careers.
