{"id":186,"date":"2021-05-18T12:51:16","date_gmt":"2021-05-18T12:51:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/enuapplyscience\/?p=186"},"modified":"2021-05-18T12:53:58","modified_gmt":"2021-05-18T12:53:58","slug":"school-of-applied-sciences-joins-new-uk-advanced-therapies-skills-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/enuapplyscience\/2021\/05\/18\/school-of-applied-sciences-joins-new-uk-advanced-therapies-skills-training\/","title":{"rendered":"School joins\u00a0new UK\u00a0Advanced Therapies Skills Training Network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new national training centre in Scotland is to help drive development of opportunities emerging in vaccine manufacturing, as well as cell and gene therapy.<\/p>\n<p>It is one of new three UK training centres that together form The Advanced Therapies Skills Training Network (ATSTN).<\/p>\n<p>All partners in the Network will now work collaboratively to address a skills gap first identified two years ago. In 2019, The Skills Demand Survey conducted by the UK government\u2019s Cell and Gene Therapy (CGT) Catapult found rising concern among vaccine manufacturers and Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP) companies about their ability to recruit and retain skilled talent in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>In fact,&nbsp;83% of companies&nbsp;were&nbsp;concerned&nbsp;about their ability to capitalise on emerging opportunities,&nbsp;because skills&nbsp;anticipated to be essential&nbsp;were&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;at that time&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;missing.<\/p>\n<p>Created&nbsp;as a&nbsp;direct response,&nbsp;ATSTN is&nbsp;being&nbsp;backed by \u00a34.7m from the Department for Business, Energy &amp; Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and Innovate UK (IUK).&nbsp;Activity&nbsp;across&nbsp;all&nbsp;the&nbsp;UK&nbsp;partners&nbsp;will be coordinated by the CGT Catapult.<\/p>\n<p>In Scotland,&nbsp;the Network\u2019s&nbsp;delivery&nbsp;is&nbsp;being&nbsp;led by&nbsp;RoslinCT&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp; a cell and gene therapy\/ATMP Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO)&nbsp;\u2013 via the RoslinCT Training Academy&nbsp;and The School of Applied Sciences at Edinburgh Napier University.&nbsp;Other delivery partners are&nbsp;North Ayrshire College,&nbsp;IBioIC, Skills Development Scotland, Scottish Universities Life Science Alliance and Scottish Enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ATSTN is a truly collaborative initiative, developed by industry in partnership with academia, and the expertise from all three centres will create a wealth of learning resources,\u201d said Professor Gary Hutchison, Dean of the School of Applied Sciences. \u201cDevelopment and delivery of our own courses for the National Training Centre is testament to the work we have been doing here at Edinburgh Napier over the last decade; delivering graduates who are work-ready and have the expertise and skills to enable the therapies of the future, including new vaccines.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/enuapplyscience\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2019\/06\/1606503-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/enuapplyscience\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2019\/06\/1606503-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/enuapplyscience\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2019\/06\/1606503-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/enuapplyscience\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2019\/06\/1606503-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/enuapplyscience\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2019\/06\/1606503-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/enuapplyscience\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/73\/2019\/06\/1606503.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Gary Hutchison.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Training Centre now aims to have its first \u2018blended-learning\u2019 courses available for delivery in Scotland by the end of 2021. Face-to-face content will be delivered at RoslinCT\u2019s Edinburgh campus at their newly built state of the art facility.,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are delighted to lead the Scottish&nbsp;training&nbsp;centre,\u201d said&nbsp;Janet Downie, Chief Executive at&nbsp;RoslinCT.&nbsp;\u201cWith the tremendous growth&nbsp;opportunities in&nbsp;both&nbsp;ATMP and&nbsp;vaccine&nbsp;manufacturing,&nbsp;we are&nbsp;all&nbsp;looking forward to working with&nbsp;The National Horizons Centre and the University of Birmingham&nbsp; to deliver&nbsp;this&nbsp;UK-wide training service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With&nbsp;their complementary capabilities and vast wealth of experience across GMP\/GxP, manufacturing and
