In the year before, the tenth anniversary of the Armistice,\u00a0a number of\u00a0non-fiction books were published assessing the treaty and its impact, questioning the outcome of the Great War. Hermann\u00a0Stegemann openly\u00a0condemns the treaty in\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The\u00a0M<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">irage\u00a0of\u00a0Versailles<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">:\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">In the wildness of its design and the glaringness of its\u00a0colours\u00a0it shows that the World War has not resolved the world crisis, but has ended in blind confusion\u201d (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">1919, p. 18).<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Questions surrounding not only the treaty itself but the war-guilt clause and\u00a0accusations of Germany\u2019s sole responsibility\u00a0for the war also came to a head.\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Times\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">reported the discontent felt with the\u00a0treaty\u00a0by the states accused.\u00a0The below extract from <em>The Times<\/em> is one example of the reaction from both Europe and the US.\u00a0Whether\u00a0or not\u00a0Britons had as strong a\u00a0reaction\u00a0towards\u00a0Germany\u2019s discontentment, there was\u00a0an undeniable\u00a0growing interest in the German experience of the war demonstrated by the increasing demand for translated German war books. During that same year,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Erich\u00a0Maria\u00a0Remarque<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019s iconic\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Im Westen Nichts<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Neues<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0(All Quiet on the Western Front)\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">was released and his portrayal of German soldiers as a \u2018miserable, downtrodden pawn\u2019\u00a0(Eksteins,\u00a01980, p. 375) was met with\u00a0a mixture of both sympathy and condemnation by British readers and reviewers.\u00a0\u00a0Assessments veered between seeing it as disreputable and exceptional; similarly, in Germany it was\u00a0criticised\u00a0from both political\u00a0wings,:\u00a0from the left, for not\u00a0condemning\u00a0war enough, and from the right, for\u00a0criticising\u00a0the German soldier.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_190\" style=\"width: 238px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-190\" class=\"size-full wp-image-190\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/45\/2021\/10\/Austrian-sympathy.jpg\" alt=\"Times Newspaper article of 29 June 1929 headlined &quot;Austrian Sympathy with Germany&quot;\" width=\"228\" height=\"271\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-190\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Austrian Sympathy with Germany&#8221;, The Times, 29 June 1929.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">During the anniversary of the treaty and with the increasing popularity of Remarque\u2019s German bestseller, the demand for German translations continued to grow. In the database of works of the War Books Boom that has been compiled for this project (which will be made publicly available via a DOI when a related academic article is published), 1930 sees over 50% of the translated works recorded coming from German originals; there is a steady\u00a0increase in the number of texts translated from German, peaking, as with the boom itself, in\u00a01930.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Alongside Remarque\u2019s work,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Walter Bloem<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019s World War I memoir\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vormarsch<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0(<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Advance from Mons 1914: The Experiences of a German Infantry Officer),\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">which was translated into English in 1930,<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">was successful among British readers. Lieut.-Colonel F. E. Whitton claims it as the \u2018most accurate war-book that has come out of Germany\u2019\u00a0(Whitton, 1930).\u00a0Similarly, Edwin Erich\u00a0Dwinger\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The\u00a0Army Behind Barbed W<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">ire: A\u00a0Siberian\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Diary\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">(1930)\u202fwas received with success, later praised for its \u2018documentary style which embellished its truth value\u2019\u00a0(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Fritzche<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, 2012, p.111). It tells of Dwinger\u2019s individual suffering and accusations towards the dehumanising impact of war. He writes about a dead body, stating that this man \u2018is no longer a sapper from Hardberg called Meier or Muller, this winter, he is only Typhus Casualty Number 14324\u2019 (Dwinger, 1930, p.121).
