Organised by the Wood Technology Society, this event aims to bring together\u00a0wood scientists, technologists, and businesses from all areas of the timber industry.<\/p>\n

The primary aim is to report the latest developments in timber research in the UK,\u00a0and to discuss their potential within UK markets as new products or processes.\u00a0It has been ten years since the last Institute of Wood Science conference in Bath\u00a0in 2008. During this time the timber industry has recovered from recession; seen\u00a0growth in modified woods, wood plastic composites and CLT; adapted to the\u00a0restriction of CCA and many other preservatives and marvelled at the advent of\u00a0tall timber buildings. Meanwhile researchers have been developing new testing\u00a0techniques; advanced models of cell wall structure and mechanics; grading models\u00a0for British species and new biobased adhesives, among others. It is high time for a\u00a0conference to bring these many areas of timber research under one roof to share information and ideas.<\/p>\n

This new format conference will span all topics related to timber, ranging from the\u00a0fundamental experiments understanding the nano-scale through to the industrial\u00a0application and development of new products. Topics will range from preservation\u00a0to panel products; modified wood to engineered lumber.<\/p>\n

The conference is organised by the Wood Technology Society of the Institute for\u00a0Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3).<\/p>\n

TIMBER 2018: CALL FOR PAPERS<\/a><\/p>\n

The event will provide a forum to present academic and industrial research in\u00a0timber. A poster session will allow additional opportunities to showcase early-stage\u00a0research and demonstrate industrial product development. Don\u2019t miss this\u00a0opportunity to present your work to a mixed audience of academics, consultants\u00a0and timber industry professionals.<\/p>\n

Papers are sought in all areas of timber research:
\n– Timber in the built environment and occupant well-being
\n–\u00a0Degradation (protection and preservation)
\n–\u00a0Structures and applications
\n–\u00a0Anatomy, nanostructural modelling and biomechanics
\n–\u00a0Wood modification
\n–\u00a0Engineered wood, composites and panels
\n–\u00a0Marine applications
\n–\u00a0Designing with wood
\n–\u00a0Grading and quality in the 21st Century
\n–\u00a0Aesthetics \u2013 indoors and out
\n–\u00a0Advances in fundamental wood science
\n–\u00a0Wood in cultural heritage
\n–\u00a0Adhesives, paints, coatings and finishes<\/p>\n

Abstracts for both oral presentation and poster presentations will be considered.\u00a0Please send your abstracts of up to 600 words to the conference organisers\u00a0(timber2018@bangor.ac.uk) by 16th\u00a0February 2018.<\/p>\n

Abstracts will be reviewed by the\u00a0scientific committee, headed by Dr Graham Ormondroyd (WTS vice-chair), with\u00a0representation from wood science, engineering and wood technology academics.
\nIf selected for presentation a full paper will be requested by 16th April for inclusion\u00a0in the conference proceedings. A selection of papers will also be put forward to a special issue of the WTS\u2019s journal, the International Wood Products Journal,\u00a0published by Maney.<\/p>\n
