{"id":847,"date":"2016-05-20T15:10:16","date_gmt":"2016-05-20T15:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/?p=847"},"modified":"2016-12-19T14:39:26","modified_gmt":"2016-12-19T14:39:26","slug":"bsen14081-1_2016-published","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/bsen14081-1_2016-published\/","title":{"rendered":"BS EN 14081-1:2016 published"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The new version of EN 14018-1 &#8220;Timber structures &#8211; Strength\u00a0graded structural timber with\u00a0rectangular cross section.\u00a0Part 1: General requirements&#8221; has now been <a href=\"http:\/\/shop.bsigroup.com\/ProductDetail?pid=000000000030288843\" target=\"_blank\">published by the British Standards Institution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is the head standard that\u00a0specifies requirements for strength graded structural timber (with\u00a0cross-sectional dimensions complying with EN 336).<\/p>\n<p>(Note: this standard still needs to be cited in the <a href=\"http:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/oj\/direct-access.html\" target=\"_blank\">OJEU<\/a> before it becomes a &#8216;proper&#8217; harmonised standard. \u00a0Edit: 13 December 2016. \u00a0This still has not happened. There is very brief*, but not understandable, feedback from the European Commission via CEN &#8211; but a better explanation of the required work is still needed)<\/p>\n<p>This new issue also means withdrawal of\u00a0part 4 (EN 14081-4:2009), which contains some grading machine settings. \u00a0This standard had not been updated for a long time and it was an impossible task to revise the standard quickly enough to incorporate new machine grading settings as fast as they were approved. \u00a0There are also now\u00a0so now so many tables of settings they could not possibly be fitted into a standard. \u00a0Instead, settings that are accepted by CEN\/TC124 (via <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/the-mysterious-tg1\/\">TG1<\/a>) will be documented in &#8220;Approved Grading Reports (AGR)&#8221;. \u00a0It is envisaged that producers will obtain these settings through the grading machine manufacturers, while Notified Bodies will obtain them through Sector Group 18&#8217;s website.<\/p>\n<p>Other modifications include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Updates to Clause 6 and Annex ZA to adapt to the Construction Products Regulations (CE marking etc)<\/li>\n<li>New clauses on Fire Resistance, release of dangerous substances, geometrical data and\u00a0environmental issues<\/li>\n<li>Improvement of some definitions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The improvement of definitions includes some changes of meaning (compared to what many previously understood). \u00a0Chief among these is the clarification that &#8220;dry graded timber&#8221; is timber for which the grading is completed at a moisture content of 20% or less. \u00a0\u00a0Completed means the check for fissures and distortion &#8211; the rest of the grading could have been done at higher moisture content, provided that moisture content was taken into account during grading. \u00a0There is no direct correspondence with service classes (more <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/strength-grading-of-sawn-timber-in-europe\/\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For the UK the biggest change is in what is now permitted in terms of marking the timber. \u00a0 BS EN 14801-1 has text in the National Forward and National Annex to clarify the official UK position.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The UK committee took an active part in developing this edition of\u00a0EN 14081-1. They do however disagree with what has been included in\u00a0this standard for strength graded timber with only \u2018package marking\u2019.<br \/>\nNational Annex NA of this document confirms the committee\u2019s\u00a0position on strength graded timber marked according to Method B\u00a0(package marking). It also provides guidance on the CE marking\u00a0and documentation requirements set out by this standard and the\u00a0Construction Products Regulation (EU) No 305\/2011.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For more information on marking (what is now covered in the NA), see our <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/whats-new-about-grade-stamps\/\">previous blog post on grade stamps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>* the feedback from the European Commission, via CEN, as of the date of the CEN TC124 WG2 meeting (13 December 2016) is &#8220;AVCP system shall not be mentioned in the standard;
