The event was organised and hosted by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London and promoted by the Cementitious Materials Group of The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, The Institute of Concrete Technology and The Mineralogical Society. \u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iom3.org\/wood-technology-society\" target=\"_blank\">Wood Technology Society<\/a> is also part of The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining so it was good to get wood in there amongst the concrete.<\/p>\n<p>The Forum provided an opportunity for young researchers, involved in construction materials, to present their work and exchange ideas in a friendly and supportive environment. \u00a0David presented part of his work on timber for construction.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Timber in Great Britain is mostly produced from Sitka spruce (<em>Picea sitchensis<\/em>). Biotic threats have led tree growers to consider the planting of a wider range of species to offer a more resilient forest. There is little information on how this will impact on domestic timber production, and the future supply of graded structural timber. Samples from some of the candidate species were tested according to standard procedures and assessed against current timber grades. Results showed that it is possible to produce timber suitable for use in construction from these species.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of wood produced in G.B., particularly\u00a0for construction, comes from Sitka spruce, a\u00a0species that has been grown for this purpose since\u00a0around 1920. Many years of research and industrial\u00a0experience have characterised the wood properties\u00a0of this species. However, recent outbreaks of pests\u00a0and diseases in the UK have highlighted the\u00a0potential threats to a species monoculture;\u00a0diversifying the species being grown is one way to\u00a0manage the risk and ensure that there is a wood\u00a0supply for future generations.\u00a0There are differences in wood properties between\u00a0species and in order to provide guidance on which\u00a0species are likely to be useful for timber, we need\u00a0to collect some evidence. The environment plays a\u00a0big role in shaping the timber that a tree produces\u00a0therefore we need to examine trees in the regions\u00a0in which are likely to be grown.<\/p>\n<p>This study investigates the wood properties of four\u00a0conifer tree species that currently form a minor\u00a0component of the wood resource in G.B. but may\u00a0play a more important role in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The four species investigated in this paper are:\u00a0Norway spruce (<em>Picea abies<\/em>), noble fir (<em>Abies\u00a0procera<\/em>), western red cedar (<em>Thuja plicata<\/em>) and\u00a0western hemlock (<em>Tsuga heterophylla<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Our research demonstrates that the four species\u00a0investigated are potentially capable of producing\u00a0high yields of C16 (the basic customary strength\u00a0class used in the United Kingdom) for a rotation\u00a0length of 45 years.
