{"id":2081,"date":"2019-04-08T14:25:02","date_gmt":"2019-04-08T14:25:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/?p=2081"},"modified":"2019-04-08T14:25:12","modified_gmt":"2019-04-08T14:25:12","slug":"roots-for-further-growth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/roots-for-further-growth\/","title":{"rendered":"Roots for further growth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forestryscotland.com\/media\/390514\/roots%20for%20further%20growth%20-%20november%202018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roots for Further Growth<\/a>&#8221; is a document prepared by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forestryscotland.com\/about-us\/sftt-leadership-group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forest and Timber Technologies Industry Leadership Group (ILG)<\/a>, and sets out a strategy and action plan for the forest and timber technologies sector in Scotland up to 2030.&nbsp; You should read it alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/publications\/scotlands-forestry-strategy-20192029\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scotland&#8217;s Forestry Strategy 2019-2029 published by the Scottish Government<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are five strategic priorities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maximise the economic outputs of Scotland\u2019s forest and fibre resource.<\/li>\n<li>Improve the safety and productivity of the wood fibre supply chain.<\/li>\n<li>Expand markets and add value.<\/li>\n<li>Develop a work force with skills for the future which support inclusive growth.<\/li>\n<li>Understand and communicate the forest and wood-based industries\u2019 contributions to Scotland\u2019s economy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An action plan towards these is given in section 5 of the document.&nbsp; Edinburgh Napier University (abbreviated as ENU) is listed as part of the delivery of the following:<\/p>\n<p>STRATEGIC PRIORITY 3<br \/>\nDeveloping Markets and Adding Value<\/p>\n<p><strong>18.<\/strong> Identify existing and new markets suitable for supply by Scottish grown timber and timber products through innovation, research and development, such as:<br \/>\n&#8211; Manufacture and use of solid timber products and systems in Scotland.<br \/>\n&#8211; Manufacture of timber rich retrofit products.<br \/>\n&#8211; Designing timber deconstruction in future buildings.<br \/>\n&#8211; New designs for timber rich houses\/buildings for all markets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>20.<\/strong> Explore and promote the opportunities for wood fibre as a \u2018feedstock for bio-refining in Scotland\u2019 that are presently being investigated.<\/p>\n<p>We will play a part in helping some of the others too.<\/p>\n<p>(The featured image above shows some of the general technological developments expected in the coming years.
