{"id":1404,"date":"2017-11-13T10:30:23","date_gmt":"2017-11-13T10:30:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/?p=1404"},"modified":"2017-11-13T10:31:31","modified_gmt":"2017-11-13T10:31:31","slug":"iso-timber-grading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/iso-timber-grading\/","title":{"rendered":"ISO standards for timber grading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s worth keeping an eye on what is happening with ISO (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Organization for Standardization<\/a>) standards for timber grading.\u00a0 This is covered by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/committee\/53584.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ISO TC 165<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;timber structures&#8221;.\u00a0 There are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/committee\/53584\/x\/catalogue\/p\/0\/u\/1\/w\/0\/d\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">several interesting standards<\/a> under this technical committee, but it&#8217;s the ones under working group WG11 &#8220;classification of solid timber&#8221; that we will briefly consider in this blog post &#8211; specifically these two:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/standard\/69945.html?browse=tc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ISO 13912<\/a>\u00a0Structural timber &#8211; Machine strength grading &#8211; Basic principles<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/standard\/69946.html?browse=tc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ISO 9709<\/a>\u00a0Structural timber &#8211; Visual strength grading &#8211; Basic principles<\/p>\n<p>Both of these refer to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/standard\/57243.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ISO 16598:2015<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/news\/2016\/12\/Ref2150.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provides a basic international framework<\/a> for establishing structural classes for sawn timber<\/p>\n<p>A revision of ISO 13912 was, not long ago, voted through and so should be soon published, replacing the previous version: ISO 13912:2005.<\/p>\n<p>The current version of ISO 9709 is the 2005 version (confirmed in 2009), but an Enquiry stage draft (ISO\/DIS) was very recently voted through.\u00a0 The draft standard will undergo some further revision, following comments, and submitted to a second DIS vote by February 2018.\u00a0 A new annex will be added showing an example for tropical hardwoods.<\/p>\n<p>ISO 16598 has a lot in it that we could comment on &#8211; but we will reserve for a future blog post.\u00a0 For now we will observe that it provides a couple of definitions that are not well covered in the current European Standards for timber grading &#8211; but are terms we use a lot in our work:<\/p>\n<p>full-size specimen:\u00a0a timber test piece that is similar in size and characteristics to typical structural timbers and is\u00a0prepared and tested in a way similar to use in construction.<br \/>\n(we often also call this a &#8220;structural size specimen&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>small clear specimen:\u00a0a timber test piece that is much smaller than typical structural timbers and normally prepared to be\u00a0free of visible defects.<\/p>\n<p>As with the European system, the ISO requires that all major property data are based on full-size testing of timber.\u00a0 Exceptions are allowed when\u00a0consideration of small clear wood test data is necessary for cost or practical reasons <em>and<\/em> supported by data that shows the relationship to full-size structural performance (sometimes the case for tropical hardwoods).\u00a0 The ISO remarks that data for small and full-size testing should be kept separate &#8211;
