{"id":1289,"date":"2017-07-14T17:31:41","date_gmt":"2017-07-14T17:31:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/?p=1289"},"modified":"2017-07-14T17:34:48","modified_gmt":"2017-07-14T17:34:48","slug":"for-wood-measure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/for-wood-measure\/","title":{"rendered":"For wood measure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How big is a piece of timber?<\/p>\n<p>If you are using a grading standard &#8211; such as the new European visual grading standard for tropical hardwoods EN 16737 &#8211; you will be directed to EN 336 for the topic\u00a0of cross-section sizes and permissible deviations. \u00a0We\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/en336-customary-sizes\/\">previously blogged about EN 336\u00a0here<\/a>. But how do you actually\u00a0measure\u00a0those dimensions?<\/p>\n<p>EN 336 refers you to EN 1309-1 for measuring cross-section dimensions. \u00a0The scope of this standard tells you that it &#8220;specifies the methods of\u00a0measuring dimensions of sawn timber.&#8221; and that &#8220;This standard applies to hardwood and softwood sawn timber, both square-edged and unedged.&#8221; but also &#8220;This standard\u00a0does not apply to tropical timber.&#8221; [<em>oops &#8211; that needs to be fixed, otherwise how do we know how to measure a piece of tropical timber?]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here is what EN 1309-1 tells you:<\/p>\n<p>For thickness (the smaller cross-section dimension)<br \/>\n&#8211; You need a measuring device graduated to an accuracy of at least 0.1 mm. \u00a0[<em>is that precision or accuracy? and that seems awfully precise if the timber is large]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For width (the larger cross-section dimension)<br \/>\n&#8211; You need a measuring device\u00a0graduated to an accuracy of at least 1 mm. [<em>hang on&#8230; 10 times less accurate than for the thickness? &#8230;although probably not going to bother having two different devices anyway. \u00a0<\/em><em>And what to do if the timber is square? \u00a0Will have to look up the proper definitions of thickness and width now]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For length<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0You need a measuring device\u00a0graduated to an accuracy of at least 5 mm.<\/p>\n<p>For this blog post we will only consider here the case that the timber is square-edged. \u00a0For this\u00a0you measure the thickness and width\u00a0at least three places. \u00a0Those places need to be free from defects. You measure near to each end (but at least 150 mm from it) and at some random point along the length. \u00a0The smallest of these three measurements (each of thickness and width) is taken to be the measurement.<\/p>\n<p>You state the thickness in mm to one decimal place and also the width in mm to one decimal place [<em>even though you are allowed to measure that with a device with 1 mm graduations &#8211; interesting]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For length, you measure just once and express the result in metres to two decimal places, rounded down.<\/p>\n<p>The measurement precision requirements are interesting because the test standard EN 408 only requires you to measure dimensions to 1% accuracy &#8230;which is actually a lower accuracy requirement for anything bigger than 10 mm!<\/p>\n<p>The definition of width and thickness is actually in EN 844-6 [<em>you need to buy a lot of standards to measure timber]<\/em>\u00a0and it says:<br \/>\nThickness is the &#8220;Distance between the faces of a\u00a0piece of sawn timber at the\u00a0specified place of measurement&#8221; and<br \/>\nWidth is the &#8220;Distance between the edges of a\u00a0piece of sawn timber at the\u00a0specified place of measurement&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Firstly &#8211; if we are being pedantic &#8211; this disagrees with how we are told to measure the timber because these are not about the place of measurement. \u00a0Secondly, now we have to look up the definitions of face and edge. &#8230;we find those (eventually) in EN 844-3:<br \/>\n&#8211; Face is either the two wider faces of the cross-section, or any of the four faces if the timber is square.<br \/>\n&#8211; Edge is either of the two narrower faces of the cross-section.<\/p>\n<p>OK &#8211; now we have an interesting new fact: Square timber has four faces and therefore four thicknesses (and no widths).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/en336-customary-sizes\/\">EN 336 tells you that the reference moisture content is 20 % and it gives you some adjustment factors for moisture content change, as well as the two tolerance classes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, a loose traditional term like &#8220;two by four&#8221; would refer to the closest customary\u00a0metric size of 47\u00a0mm by 100 mm. \u00a0But if this was tolerance class 2 (machined on both sides) it would be a target size (because of the planing) of 44\u00a0mm by 97 mm. \u00a0This target size is at 20% moisture content. \u00a0When the piece is in service it is more likely to be about 12% moisture content. \u00a0So, allowing for both moisture and tolerance class the piece can be as small as 41.8 mm by 93.3 mm. \u00a0Which is actually about\u00a01 &amp; 5\/8 inches by 3 &amp; 5\/8 inches.<\/p>\n<p>If this all sounds slightly mind bending\u00a0&#8211; spare a thought for the US where the topic of how big a &#8220;two by four&#8221; is, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/georgia\/articles\/2017-06-22\/lawsuits-complain-that-2x4s-other-boards-dont-measure-up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">now in the hands of lawyers<\/a>. \u00a0(fyi, a two by four in the US can be a fair bit smaller still)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>How big is a piece of timber?
