{"id":1243,"date":"2017-05-12T19:21:37","date_gmt":"2017-05-12T19:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/?p=1243"},"modified":"2017-05-19T10:07:52","modified_gmt":"2017-05-19T10:07:52","slug":"woodprops1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/woodprops1\/","title":{"rendered":"Job &#8211; Wood Props for Ireland project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuigalway.ie\/about-us\/jobs\/researchjobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NUIG 086-17 Postdoctoral Researcher 1 <\/a>(WoodProps Project) College of Engineering &amp; Informatics, National University of Ireland Galway.<\/p>\n<p>Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a fixed-term, 36-month contract position as a postdoctoral researcher with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuigalway.ie\/terg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Timber Engineering Research Group<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuigalway.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">College of Engineering and Informatics<\/a>, National University of Ireland, Galway (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuigalway.ie\/engineering-informatics\/\">NUI Galway<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Project Description:<\/p>\n<p>Wood Properties for Ireland (WoodProps) is a joint project between the Timber Engineering Research Group at NUI Galway and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.napier.ac.uk\/research-and-innovation\/research-search\/centres\/centre-for-wood-science-and-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centre for Wood Science and Technology<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.napier.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edinburgh Napier University<\/a>. It will address issues related to characterisation of Irish-grown timber and associated work at National and European level in standardisation for structural timber quality and production \u2013 with particular focus on grading. Over the course of the project, researchers will undertake exchange of knowledge related to wood quality, products and standards with forestry and processing industries, and will provide expert advice to regulatory bodies related to construction of modern timber buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The project is funded by the Forestry Division of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.gov.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Job Description:<\/p>\n<p>The successful candidate will undertake<\/p>\n<p>Timber resource quantification and evaluation<br \/>\nExperimental characterisation of key structural properties of softwoods in the field and laboratory<br \/>\nActive participation in National and European standards committees<br \/>\nEngagement with industry and public bodies<br \/>\nAssist in supervision of PhD students.<br \/>\nPreparation of project reports and dissemination of outputs and activities.<br \/>\nThe post holder will spend up to two months per year working with project partners at Edinburgh Napier University (Scotland) and be required to travel within Europe for meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Essential criteria:<\/p>\n<p>PhD degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, Wood Science, Forestry or related discipline \u2013 or equivalent work experience<br \/>\nExcellent professional communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrated commitment to deliver and publish results, adaptability and the ability to work in a team environment.<br \/>\nExperience of experimental characterisation of mechanical\/physical properties of engineering materials.<br \/>\nExperience of data manipulation, analysis and management.<br \/>\nDemonstrable project management skills.<br \/>\nGood publication track record.<br \/>\nFluent in spoken and written English.<\/p>\n<p>Desirable criteria:<\/p>\n<p>Knowledge of standardisation processes, and especially timber grading<br \/>\nExperience in timber production, engineering or design.<br \/>\nExperience of industry engagement<br \/>\nExperience and capability in statistical analysis and\/or programming.<br \/>\nAbility to speak German or French.<br \/>\nSalary: \u20ac37,750 per annum Start date: Position available from 1st July 2017.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, and application process, go to:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuigalway.ie\/about-us\/jobs\/researchjobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.nuigalway.ie\/about-us\/jobs\/researchjobs\/<\/a> and look for\u00a0NUIG 086-17<\/p>\n<p>The closing date for receipt of applications is 5pm on Monday 1st June 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Interviews are planned to be held on 8th June 2017.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>NUIG 086-17 Postdoctoral Researcher 1 (WoodProps Project) College of Engineering &amp; Informatics, National University of Ireland Galway.
