{"id":1008,"date":"2016-09-30T17:27:21","date_gmt":"2016-09-30T17:27:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/?p=1008"},"modified":"2016-09-30T17:27:21","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T17:27:21","slug":"what-research-on-hardwoods-is-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/what-research-on-hardwoods-is-needed\/","title":{"rendered":"What research on hardwoods is needed in Europe?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/growth\/tools-databases\/eip-raw-materials\/en\/content\/european-hardwoods-innovation-alliance-0\" target=\"_blank\">European Hardwoods Innovation Alliance (EHIA)<\/a>\u00a0is seeking views in what innovation and research is needed for hardwoods in Europe. \u00a0The scope is broad, covering\u00a0cover both forestry and technological-industrial topics. \u00a0You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/r\/EHIA\" target=\"_blank\">access the survey here<\/a>, but it closes on 13th October.<\/p>\n<p>Historically hardwoods were used in the construction sector, furniture, cladding, flooring etc but, today, the forest-based industries within Europe are predominately based on softwood use. Coniferous tree species account for 57% of the European growing stock in forests so the very large\u00a0potential in the\u00a0rich and diverse resource of broadleaves. \u00a0This marks the beginning of a long term initiative to change that &#8211; and the survey is your opportunity to shape the research agenda.<\/p>\n<p>EHIA aims to create a focused alliance dedicated to hardwood species as a complementary potential field for innovations &#8211; parallel to the already well developed value chains built on softwood species. \u00a0The UK makes <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/grade-in-britain\/\">very little use of home grown hardwoods<\/a>\u00a0so this is an interesting development to keep an eye on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The alliance runs under the umbrella of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.innovawood.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">InnovaWood<\/a> in close collaboration with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.efi.int\/portal\/\" target=\"_blank\">European Forest Institute (EFI)<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>The European Hardwoods Innovation Alliance (EHIA)\u00a0is seeking views in what innovation and research is needed for hardwoods in Europe. \u00a0The scope is broad, covering\u00a0cover both <a class=\"mh-excerpt-more\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/what-research-on-hardwoods-is-needed\/\" title=\"What research on hardwoods is needed in Europe?\">[&#8230;]<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"author":57,"featured_media":851,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_crdt_document":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[75],"class_list":["post-1008","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-research","tag-hardwoods"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>What research on hardwoods is needed in Europe?
