But just to recap: Phil says that this is not a true hammerbeam roof, because it is missing the hammerbeam. This is where the hammerbeam would normally be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"470\" height=\"287\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4006\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phil is being called to inspect buildings, as he said, either preemptively or if some damage is suspected. And Phil&#8217;s expertise in this is invaluable, as in-situ &#8220;grading&#8221; is not exactly a straightforward process. There is no European or UK standard for in-situ assessment, and the task is complicated. A bit more on the challenges of in-situ grading: <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/cwst\/grading-of-existing-structures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Visual grading of existing structures.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developing an in-situ grading standard could be part of a project that investigates the properties of &#8220;old&#8221; timber (read: recovered wood). We are hoping to get into new projects on the topic soon! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some exciting ideas on how the method could work have already been examined by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpool.ac.uk\/people\/michael-bather\/publications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mike Bather in his PhD thesis<\/a> (supervised by Dan Ridley-Ellis).
