Mike joined Edinburgh Napier University in 2015 as a part time PhD student investigating the assessment of the mechanical properties of historical timber. In the first year of his research, he has carried out testing in both Edinburgh and Bolton.<\/p>\n
He\u00a0is a\u00a0Senior Lecturer at \u00a0University of Bolton delivering modules in structural engineering at HNC, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is also the course leader for the MSc Civil Engineering course and course leader for the professional development course: Preparation for the Chartered Membership Exam for the Institution of Structural Engineers.<\/p>\n
He has experience of the appraisal and reuse of existing buildings and structures, first, as a practising structural engineer and later as an academic. This field of work forms an important part of the built environment\u2019s refurbishment and maintenance industry, which comprises around half of all spending on construction in the UK. Mike is interested in improving the accuracy of the assessment of the mechanical properties of insitu timber by researching and testing investigative techniques (in isolation and combined) on both new and old timber.<\/p>\n
Since originally graduating in 1983 he\u00a0has gained over 20 years\u2019 experience as a consulting structural engineer; working on a wide range of projects, from small-scale repair and refurbishment to multi-million-pound international schemes. He\u00a0became chartered too\u00a0long ago to remember and is\u00a0an active member of the Institution of Structural Engineers: He is\u00a0a Student Liaison Officer, a corresponding member of the IStructE Education Committee and a member of the Joint Board of Moderators.<\/p>\n
Having moved into teaching in 2008, he\u00a0undertook a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education in 2010 and gained a MA in the same subject in 2013. In 2014 he\u00a0became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.<\/p>\n
