SUMMARY:WSE: Northern European Network for Wood Science and Engineering
DESCRIPTION:This two-day Wood Science and Engineering Network Workshop will be held in Tallinn\, Estonia\, with theme: “Increasing the value of materials\, products and byproducts in wood technology” \nHow can we make better use of byproducts and coproducts? A lot of this material is now going to energy production\, but the biopolymers from wood are way too valuable to just being transformed to energy. \nMore details on the conference website https://www.ttu.ee/institutes/department-of-materials-and-environmental-technology/wse-2018-2/ \nN2019-03

SUMMARY:Timber 2018 (WTS of IOM3)
DESCRIPTION:Organised by the Wood Technology Society\, this event aims to bring together wood scientists\, technologists\, and businesses from all areas of the timber industry. \nThe primary aim is to report the latest developments in timber research in the UK\, and to discuss their potential within UK markets as new products or processes. It has been ten years since the last Institute of Wood Science conference in Bath in 2008. During this time the timber industry has recovered from recession; seen growth in modified woods\, wood plastic composites and CLT; adapted to the restriction of CCA and many other preservatives and marvelled at the advent of tall timber buildings. Meanwhile researchers have been developing new testing techniques; advanced models of cell wall structure and mechanics; grading models for British species and new biobased adhesives\, among others. It is high time for a conference to bring these many areas of timber research under one roof to share information and ideas. \nThis new format conference will span all topics related to timber\, ranging from the fundamental experiments understanding the nano-scale through to the industrial application and development of new products. Topics will range from preservation to panel products; modified wood to engineered lumber. \nThe conference is organised by the Wood Technology Society of the Institute for Materials\, Minerals and Mining (IOM3). \nTIMBER 2018: CALL FOR PAPERS \nThe event will provide a forum to present academic and industrial research in timber. A poster session will allow additional opportunities to showcase early-stage research and demonstrate industrial product development. Don’t miss this opportunity to present your work to a mixed audience of academics\, consultants and timber industry professionals. \nPapers are sought in all areas of timber research:\n– Timber in the built environment and occupant well-being\n– Degradation (protection and preservation)\n– Structures and applications\n– Anatomy\, nanostructural modelling and biomechanics\n– Wood modification\n– Engineered wood\, composites and panels\n– Marine applications\n– Designing with wood\n– Grading and quality in the 21st Century\n– Aesthetics – indoors and out\n– Advances in fundamental wood science\n– Wood in cultural heritage\n– Adhesives\, paints\, coatings and finishes \nAbstracts for both oral presentation and poster presentations will be considered. Please send your abstracts of up to 600 words to the conference organisers (timber2018@bangor.ac.uk) by 16th February 2018. \nAbstracts will be reviewed by the scientific committee\, headed by Dr Graham Ormondroyd (WTS vice-chair)\, with representation from wood science\, engineering and wood technology academics.\nIf selected for presentation a full paper will be requested by 16th April for inclusion in the conference proceedings. A selection of papers will also be put forward to a special issue of the WTS’s journal\, the International Wood Products Journal\, published by Maney. \nContact the conference organisers on\ntimber2018@bangor.ac.uk

SUMMARY:ICF national conference
DESCRIPTION:The National Conference of the Institute of Chartered Foresters \n“Behind us we have three industrial revolutions\, with legacies of steam\, electricity and computing; all ground-breaking at the time but now taken for granted. Can you believe that the World Wide Web is still under 30 yet is driving so much of what we do? Look at how platforms like YouTube\, Facebook and LinkedIn have changed the way we learn\, how we work and interact. \nOur businesses have changed\, our lives have changed\, we’ve changed. And\, they are about to change again as we enter the Fourth Industrial – and digital\, physical and biological – Revolution. \nWe have to be ready to meet new expectations both from clients and from our workforce\, be open to new models for the forestry and arboricultural workplace and for its operations\, and know how to ensure that considerations like health and safety aren’t compromised. We have to be empowered to think differently and do things differently.”

SUMMARY:International Mass Timber Conference
DESCRIPTION:One of the largest gatherings of CLT and mass timber experts in the world\, focusing on mass timber in mid- to high-rise construction. \nExplores the supply chain for cross-laminated timber (CLT)\, nail-laminated timber\, glulam beams and panels\, mass plywood panels\, dowel-laminated timber\, and laminated veneer lumber; and the opportunities and obstacles for mass timber building in global construction.
