help to plan various social events, including small get togethers in work hours<\/p>\n<p>Activity: Reflect on recent workplace meetings. Were less experienced staff encouraged to speak freely? Were everyone\u2019s ideas considered?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Effective_Communication_Strategies\"><\/span>Effective Communication Strategies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>STEP 1: One-to-one time with mentees<br \/>\nGive mentees regular time where you\u2019re completely present and focused on their progress, and open to anything they have to say<\/p>\n<p>STEP 2: Hear mentees out<br \/>\nEnsure mentees are heard. Listen to their stories , leave space for silences to let them gather their thoughts<\/p>\n<p>STEP 3: Find commonalities<br \/>\nIdentifying things you both can relate to helps build trust based on common experience and encourage deeper conversation.<\/p>\n<p>STEP 4: Mutual respect<br \/>\nRespect the expertise they have. Respect their identity. If appropriate, make an effort to learn to preferred name and pronouns.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stereotypes_cliques\"><\/span>Stereotypes &amp; cliques<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/wblmentors\/intro-to-inclusion\/\">Watch the animation<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Stereotypes and cliques can be barriers to creating a sense of belonging in your organisation.<br \/>\nCliques, or in-groups, can emerge based on shared characteristics. But for every clique, there are people that are excluded.<\/p>\n<p>Activity: Think about how you and your colleagues interact with each other, is there an in-group based on language\/terminology?<\/p>\n<p>Stereotypes, preconceived notions based on certain characteristics, can lead to unfair assumptions, misunderstandings, and discrimination. These are not limited to harmful assumptions; stereotypes often present as making broad generalisations about a group of people.<\/p>\n<p>For example, assuming people like or dislike certain things according to their gender is likely to alienate some people. Treat your mentee as an INDIVIDUAL, ask them about their background and interests.<\/p>\n<p>A current tech sector stereotype in the tech sector is that of the &#8220;Tech Bro&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Tech Bro is a wealthy young man working in tech.<\/p>\n<p>Tech Bro workplace cultures create macho, toxic work environments, characterised by being unprofessional, overly-competitive, and sometimes crude.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Advocacy\"><\/span>Advocacy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Advocating for your mentee means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reasonable adjustments for the workplace<\/li>\n<li>Recognising and addressing discrimination they may face<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring equal access. Provide any relevant training or upskilling, and make sure your mentee is aware of opportunities<\/li>\n<li>Share your knowledge, experience, and networks<\/li>\n<li>Act as a sounding board for ideas and action plans<\/li>\n<li>Help them set goals and identify development opportunities<\/li>\n<li>Offer encouragement and support their personal and professional development<\/li>\n<li>Build the apprentice\u2019s confidence, independence, and self-belief<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Celebrating_Success\"><\/span>Celebrating Success<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s important to celebrate your mentee\u2019s achievements and successes, whether these are in their studies or the workplace. This recognises their journey and helps them feel valued. You can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Celebrate achievements of milestones and successes<\/li>\n<li>Hold a graduation ceremony<\/li>\n<li>Nominate your apprentice for the National Apprenticeship Awards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Thank_you_for_being_a_mentor\"><\/span>Thank you for being a mentor!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Your support can make a huge difference to your mentee\u2019s progress.
