{"id":648,"date":"2022-10-09T11:34:50","date_gmt":"2022-10-09T11:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/social-informatics\/?p=648"},"modified":"2022-10-09T11:36:14","modified_gmt":"2022-10-09T11:36:14","slug":"adascot22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/social-informatics\/2022\/10\/adascot22\/","title":{"rendered":"Ada Scotland Festival 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/ada.scot\/\">3<sup>rd<\/sup> Ada Scotland Festival<\/a> starts on Wednesday 12<sup>th<\/sup> October, with two weeks of activities and events, mostly online, but including in-person events for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/social-informatics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/2022\/10\/ToniScullion1.jpg\" alt=\"Toni Scullion\" class=\"wp-image-660\" \/><figcaption>Toni Scullion, co-founder of Ada Scot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ada Scot was founded in 2020 by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gla.ac.uk\/schools\/computing\/staff\/matthewbarr\/\">Dr Matt Barr<\/a> (Uni of Glasgow lecturer and SICSA Director of Education), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/toni-scullion\">Dr Toni Scullion<\/a> (Edinburgh Napier graduate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pointsoflight.gov.uk\/dresscode\/\">award-winning<\/a> school Computer Science teacher, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dresscode.org.uk\/\">dressCode<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dtecharter.org\/\">Digital Technology Education Charter<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.napier.ac.uk\/people\/ella-taylorsmith\">Dr Ella Taylor-Smith<\/a> (Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Social Informatics and Centre for Higher Education Research).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aim of the festival is to address the gender imbalance in computing subjects, by encouraging more women and girls to get involved in computing, supporting computing students, and publicising the wide range of careers available to people with digital skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, it\u2019s widely believed that techies are not people-people and that they work predominantly in partnership with their computer. However, many tech roles are highly collaborative, working in teams and using creativity and social skills to build the tools we need for a better world. So, many of the events at Ada Scot 2022 aim to showcase the interesting jobs available and give attendees opportunities to chat with the real people doing these jobs. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"382\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/social-informatics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/2022\/10\/Ada-Scot-Festival-2022-Making-Work-Work-For-You.png\" alt=\"Equate Scotland and Women into Tech Making Work Work for you\" class=\"wp-image-658\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/social-informatics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/2022\/10\/Ada-Scot-Festival-2022-Making-Work-Work-For-You.png 382w, https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/social-informatics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/2022\/10\/Ada-Scot-Festival-2022-Making-Work-Work-For-You-300x157.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" \/><figcaption>Inclusive workspaces with Equate Scotland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>the Scottish Government, who have been active and enthusiastic partners in the festival since the start, are running an <a href=\"https:\/\/ada.scot\/2022\/09\/28\/scottish-government-digital-data-technology-ddat-workshop\/\">interactive online workshop exploring their Digital, Data and Technology roles<\/a> the important work they carry out (Monday 17<sup>th<\/sup> October, 2pm and Tuesday 25<sup>th<\/sup> October, 2pm);<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/equatescotland.org.uk\/\">Equate Scotland<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/womenintotech\">Women into Tech<\/a> invite you to <a href=\"https:\/\/ada.scot\/2022\/09\/30\/making-work-work-for-you\/\">Make Work Work for You<\/a> and envision inclusive workplaces on Wednesday 19th October, 12:30;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/ada.scot\/2022\/09\/30\/tech-we-can-live-assembly-tech-to-help-people\/\">Tech We Can present \u201cTech to Help People&#8221;,<\/a> a live virtual 30-minute assembly for school children in Scotland, aged 5 \u2013 11, Thursday 27th October, 09:30;<\/li><li>And <a href=\"https:\/\/ada.scot\/2022\/09\/20\/how-teaching-tech-innovation-can-help-shape-the-future-for-young-scots\/\">Apps for Good are running a workshop<\/a> for teachers to explore how their computing resources map to the Curriculum for Excellence, and introduce their brand new climate action course, Innovate for Climate Change.
