{"id":1048,"date":"2023-10-23T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-23T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/social-informatics\/?p=1048"},"modified":"2023-11-11T15:59:12","modified_gmt":"2023-11-11T15:59:12","slug":"social-informatics-researchers-at-ecil-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/social-informatics\/2023\/10\/social-informatics-researchers-at-ecil-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Informatics researchers at ECIL 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This post follows on from <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/social-informatics\/2023\/10\/social-informatics-research-group-at-ecil2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the pre-event post<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two Social Informatics Research Group PhD research students \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/napier-repository.worktribe.com\/person\/2568010\/marina-milosheva\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marina Milosheva<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/napier-repository.worktribe.com\/person\/2947831\/drew-feeney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Drew Feeney<\/a>\u2013 were delighted to\u00a0present their work at the recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ecil2023.ilconf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 European Conference of Information Literacy (ECIL 2023)<\/a>\u00a0in Krakow, Poland. The Conference was held within the confines of the historic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.uj.edu.pl\/en_GB\/start\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jagiellonian University<\/a>, the oldest university in Poland and one of the oldest in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The theme of ECIL 2023 was \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/ecil2023.ilconf.org\/aim-scope\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Experiencing Information and Information Literacy<\/a>\u2019. This theme was discussed and carried throughout a week of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conftool.com\/ecil2023\/sessions.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stimulating keynotes, presentations, seminars, workshops and panel sessions<\/a>, where presenters described information literacy as a\u00a0&#8216;compass for what matters&#8217;, and as the\u00a0&#8216;lifeblood of our decisions and experiences&#8217;. The importance and relevance of information literacy in the digital age was underscored, in particular, by professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inf.ffzg.unizg.hr\/index.php\/en\/17-department\/276-sonja-spiranec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor Sonja \u0160piranec<\/a>\u00a0in her opening address to the ECIL audience:\u00a0&#8216;since the last time we met in person, we are five years older, but information literacy did not grow old at all!&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1417\" height=\"763\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/social-informatics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/2023\/10\/venue.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1049\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conference theme was closely linked to both\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/napier-repository.worktribe.com\/person\/2568010\/marina-milosheva\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marina<\/a>\u2019s and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/napier-repository.worktribe.com\/person\/2947831\/drew-feeney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Drew<\/a>\u2019s current work, and their own presentations as part of this programme reflected this.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"130\" height=\"118\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/social-informatics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/2023\/10\/cropped-MILA-logo-plain-lower-definition-130x118-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1030\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/napier-repository.worktribe.com\/person\/2568010\/marina-milosheva\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marina<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/social-informatics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/2023\/10\/ECIL-2023-ILIF-presentation-v4_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">session<\/a>\u00a0on the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.napier.ac.uk\/-\/media\/worktribe\/output-2910549\/information-literacy-impact-framework-final-project-report.ashx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Information Literacy Impact Framework<\/a>\u2019, co-authored with Napier colleagues <a href=\"https:\/\/napier-repository.worktribe.com\/person\/110751\/peter-cruickshank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peter Cruickshank<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/napier-repository.worktribe.com\/person\/110770\/bruce-ryan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bruce Ryan<\/a>, and sponsored by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mila.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Media and Information Literacy Alliance<\/a>, outlined a potential breakthrough in assessing the experience and impact of information literacy work. Her discussion of information literacy impact was well received by the large audience in attendance. A potential research collaboration on the theme of information literacy impact was also identified in the discussions that followed the session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drew\u2019s presentation came as part of the Conference\u2019s doctoral forum, and centred on his planned PhD work on engaging user-led approaches to develop digital literacy competencies in older adults within Scottish public libraries. Drew outlined, in particular, the participatory methodology that he will be using in this project, and received valuable and constructive feedback on this from an engaged and interested audience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1535\" height=\"939\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.napier.ac.uk\/social-informatics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/98\/2023\/10\/presenters.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1050\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Drew and Marina presenting<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ECIL conference brought together information scientists from institutions around the world to beautiful Krakow, and once again placed Edinburgh Napier at the heart of these global discussions and issues. Attendance at ECIL 2023 will only further enhance\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/napier-repository.worktribe.com\/person\/2568010\/marina-milosheva\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marina<\/a>\u2019s and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/napier-repository.worktribe.com\/person\/2947831\/drew-feeney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Drew<\/a>\u2019s work, and will greatly influence their own experience of information literacy as a global academic discipline and discourse.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>This post follows on from the pre-event post.
