Sustainable Energy: Workshops with Edinburgh Scouts

Researchers: Dr. Jubaer Ahmed, Dr. Savvas Papadopoulos, Dr. Fadi Kahwash

Workshops delivered to 3 Scout groups in Edinburgh 8th Braid Salaam Scout,  44th braid Marchmont St Giles and 28th Braid Scout, Mayfield in April and May 2025.

The renewable energy and microgrid research group was proud to deliver three interactive hands-on workshops for three Scout groups in Edinburgh. The project aim was to increase awareness of the societal and technical challenges that we will face to increase our reliance on renewable energy. The workshops were designed around solar Energy, wind Energy and hydrogen fuel cells. In three workshops around 64 Scout members from 8th Braid, 28th Braid and 44th Braid took part. The young participants, aged between 11-14, had the opportunity to conduct engineering experiments using the tools we provided. At the end of each session the Scouts took part in a quiz competition.

The participants were very curious on the technology behind the renewable energy sources, and we were bombarded with tons of questions. The verbal feedback from the participants were very positive and they appreciated our effort in designing the activities for them. The Scout leaders were highly appreciative of our effort and showed interest for future collaborations.

Thank you so much for visiting our Troop last night and teaching the Scouts so much about sustainable energy.  They really enjoyed that hands-on workshop and learned so much of how to harness nature and science for the benefit of our fragile planet.

You had clearly put a lot of work into how you could engage and educate young people and managed each of your groups perfectly.

As you could see, they really enjoyed the quiz and got very competitive, as usual.  I thought that the introduction of the coloured buzzers was a simple but brilliant concept.  I am getting some for our own annual quiz night!

Thank you again for giving the Scouts such an enjoyable and interesting night.’
