Created by animator and educator Jonathan Mortimer, the initiative began as a short animated film highlighting a significant gap in sign language vocabulary for animation and games terminology. Many technical terms commonly used in industry and education have no established equivalents in British Sign Language (BSL) or other signed languages, creating barriers for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing [DHH] students and professionals.<\/p>\n<p>First released as <em>New Signs for Animation<\/em> (2021) and later expanded into <em>AnimSign<\/em> (2024), the project combines animation, sign language performance, and voice-over narration to explore how new terminology might be developed collaboratively. Influences and Constants<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"49\" data-end=\"431\">In developing <em data-start=\"63\" data-end=\"99\">AnimSign<\/em>, I drew particular inspiration from <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Fraser MacLean<\/span><\/span> and his book <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ia903408.us.archive.org\/11\/items\/setting-the-scene-images\/setting%20the%20scene.pdf\">Setting the Scene: The Art &amp; Evolution of Animation Layout<\/a> (2011)<\/span><\/span>. The book traces the historical development of animation layout &#8211; from early studio systems through to contemporary practice &#8211; and foregrounds layout as both a technical discipline and a storytelling craft.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"433\" data-end=\"751\">Engaging with this history prompted a deeper consideration of how layout shapes meaning. MacLean\u2019s exploration of staging, spatial clarity, and the evolution of visual storytelling reinforced the idea that layout is never neutral; it determines what the audience sees, how they see it, and where their attention rests.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"753\" data-end=\"1123\">During the development of <em data-start=\"779\" data-end=\"789\">AnimSign<\/em>, I also reached out to Fraser MacLean directly to discuss the project and its approach. Those conversations were invaluable in situating the film within a broader lineage of layout practice, while also recognising that this work pushes layout into less conventional territory &#8211; as a tool for accessibility and linguistic development.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"753\" data-end=\"1123\">I arranged a video call with Fraser MacLean, the artists involved in the short film, and a BSL interpreter to facilitate the discussion:<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/OXS8vLa0P0Y\"> https:\/\/youtu.be\/OXS8vLa0P0Y\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"753\" data-end=\"1123\">With <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Pete Docter<\/span><\/span> (Chief Creative Officer of <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Pixar Animation Studios<\/span><\/span> and director of <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Monsters, Inc.<\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Up<\/span><\/span>), who has a strong interest in layout and also wrote the foreword to Maclean\u2019s book, I decided to reach out for his perspective. He kindly shared the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"><em>Hello Jon,<\/em><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"753\" data-end=\"1123\"><em>This is a tough one!\u00a0 To me, not being accustomed to signers, I find them to be distracting.\u00a0 As animators, our goal is to completely direct the viewers\u2019 eye.\u00a0 We spend great effort to show our characters\u2019 inner thoughts, which we believe is done through expressions and body language more than through their dialog.\u00a0 If you\u2019re looking away, you\u2019ll miss key information.\u00a0 We try to make our films semi-intelligible, even if you don\u2019t speak the language.<\/em><\/p>\n<div><em>So as an animation purist I would vote for the 1st option below: bespoke animation.\u00a0 Unfortunately that\u2019s probably only seldomly economically feasible.\u00a0 Animation is super time consuming.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><em>What about subtitles?\u00a0 Is that an option for deaf students?\u00a0 Since subtitles don\u2019t move around, they don\u2019t grab a person\u2019s attention as much, which therefore keeps the design of our movement intact.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><em>Good luck to you!<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>Pete<\/em><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1138\" data-end=\"1552\">I also sought industry perspective from <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">James Williams<\/span><\/span>, who was Head of Layout at <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Sony Pictures Animation<\/span><\/span> at the time of contact. Williams generously offered notes and advice on staging, compositional clarity, and the practical considerations of integrating subtitles into the frame without compromising visual balance or readability. His feedback reinforced the importance of:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1554\" data-end=\"1764\">\n<li data-start=\"1554\" data-end=\"1585\">\n<p data-start=\"1556\" data-end=\"1585\">Protecting clear sightlines<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1586\" data-end=\"1615\">\n<p data-start=\"1588\" data-end=\"1615\">Managing visual hierarchy<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1616\" data-end=\"1703\">\n<p data-start=\"1618\" data-end=\"1703\">Considering subtitle placement as part of layout design rather than an afterthought<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1704\" data-end=\"1764\">\n<p data-start=\"1706\" data-end=\"1764\">Balancing aesthetic composition with accessibility needs<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1766\" data-end=\"1868\">These conversations grounded the project\u2019s experimentation within established professional practice.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1766\" data-end=\"1868\">The primary influence on the background design and layout stemmed from a deep admiration for <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/looneytunes.fandom.com\/wiki\/Maurice_Noble\">Maurice Noble<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/looneytunes.fandom.com\/wiki\/Chuck_Jones\">Chuck Jones<\/a><\/span><\/span>. Their bold use of colour, inventive compositions, and ability to balance visual storytelling with mood served as a guiding inspiration, shaping the way environments were crafted and layouts were approached throughout the project. This influence can be seen in the way backgrounds not only support the action but also enhance the emotional tone, creating a cohesive visual narrative that feels both dynamic and intentional.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\" data-start=\"1766\" data-end=\"1868\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Modular Layout as Innovation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1974\" data-end=\"2072\">The film is designed to have a modular structure, so it can be adapted to different languages &#8211; spoken or signed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1974\" data-end=\"2072\">The layout accommodates:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2074\" data-end=\"2227\">\n<li data-start=\"2074\" data-end=\"2103\">\n<p data-start=\"2076\" data-end=\"2103\">Sign Language<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2135\" data-end=\"2157\">\n<p data-start=\"2137\" data-end=\"2157\">Voice-over narration<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2158\" data-end=\"2187\">\n<p data-start=\"2160\" data-end=\"2187\">Animated visual explanation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2188\" data-end=\"2227\">\n<p data-start=\"2190\" data-end=\"2227\">Contextual information and statistics<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2229\" data-end=\"2370\">This modularity allows the project to expand, adapt, and evolve. Animation as a Tool for Terminology Creation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2569\" data-end=\"2756\">A key aim of the project is highlighting for discussion with the Deaf community, the potential lack of established signs for animation and games terminology. Words such as \u201cpipeline,\u201d \u201crender,\u201d or \u201crigging\u201d often lack agreed sign equivalents.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2758\" data-end=\"2828\">This is where animation layout becomes experimental in a deeper sense.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2830\" data-end=\"2844\">The film uses:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2846\" data-end=\"2932\">\n<li data-start=\"2846\" data-end=\"2866\">\n<p data-start=\"2848\" data-end=\"2866\">Animated metaphors<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2867\" data-end=\"2888\">\n<p data-start=\"2869\" data-end=\"2888\">Spatial positioning<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2889\" data-end=\"2912\">\n<p data-start=\"2891\" data-end=\"2912\">Visual demonstrations<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2913\" data-end=\"2932\">\n<p data-start=\"2915\" data-end=\"2932\">Controlled pacing<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2934\" data-end=\"3065\">to help clarify meaning while signs are introduced or developed. The frame becomes a collaborative space for linguistic innovation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3067\" data-end=\"3144\">Layout does not just present information &#8211; it participates in meaning-making.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"3067\" data-end=\"3144\">The layout and placement of elements also needed to accommodate sound effect graphics, ensuring they complemented rather than distracted from the animation and signer performance. This approach was heavily influenced by a lifelong engagement with comic books, where dynamic lettering and visual cues guide the reader\u2019s attention, as well as by Cece Bell\u2019s graphic novel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/El-Deafo-Cece-Bell\/dp\/1419712179\"><em data-start=\"456\" data-end=\"466\">El Deafo<\/em><\/a> (2014), which demonstrates how sound, space, and text can be integrated thoughtfully to convey narrative and character experience. Drawing on these influences, the project sought to use sound effect graphics not just as embellishments, but as active components of the storytelling, reinforcing rhythm, mood, and meaning within each scene.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\" data-start=\"3067\" data-end=\"3144\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3067\" data-end=\"3144\"><strong>5. Too much motion risks distracting from the signer. Too little visual support risks losing conceptual clarity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3528\" data-end=\"3681\">The layout negotiates this tension by distributing attention rather than concentrating it. It avoids clutter, manages tempo, and respects cognitive load.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3683\" data-end=\"3833\">This reflects a broader experimental shift: treating accessibility as a design constraint that generates creative solutions rather than limiting them.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"3683\" data-end=\"3833\">\n<p data-start=\"63\" data-end=\"493\">I wanted to further experiment with integrating signer performance into the animation, using Deaf actors to make the signer an active part of the storytelling. While I was able to hire Deaf actors for the BSL versions of the short films, I wasn\u2019t able to fully explore this integration. Implications for Animation Practice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3880\" data-end=\"3945\"><em data-start=\"3880\" data-end=\"3916\">New Signs for Animation: AnimSign<\/em>\u00a0 (2024) suggests that layout can be:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3947\" data-end=\"4056\">\n<li data-start=\"3947\" data-end=\"3973\">\n<p data-start=\"3949\" data-end=\"3973\">A linguistic interface<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3974\" data-end=\"3999\">\n<p data-start=\"3976\" data-end=\"3999\">A collaborative space<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4000\" data-end=\"4024\">\n<p data-start=\"4002\" data-end=\"4024\">A tool for inclusion<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4025\" data-end=\"4056\">\n<p data-start=\"4027\" data-end=\"4056\">A method of experimentation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The timing of the animation was carefully adapted to align with key moments in the sign language performance, using specific keywords as landmarks to pace the action. This process was repeated for each version of the animated short film, tailored to the particular structure and rhythm of the different sign languages. The goal was to create a shared viewing experience that could be enjoyed by both hearing and Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) audiences, ensuring that the animation, narration, and signing worked together as seamlessly as possible. By synchronizing visual cues with signing, the project aimed to preserve both clarity and narrative flow, while respecting the unique tempo and expressiveness of each language.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4058\" data-end=\"4189\">For animation students and practitioners, it offers an expanded definition of what layout can do.
